Chapter 4 - The Poisoner's Ledger

The ground felt like it was shifting beneath my feet.

Elena’s sudden death two years ago... the unexpected organ failure... the doctors' complete confusion... It hadn't been a sudden medical tragedy. It was premeditated murder. And for the past eighteen months, I had left my helpless daughters in the hands of the very monster who had killed their mother.

"Digitalis?" I rasped, a wave of sickening horror sweeping through me. "Hilda has been poisoning my babies?"

"Yes," Sarah urged, reaching into her canvas bag. "She mixes liquid digitalis into their morning milk—just enough to induce constant nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, and gradual weight loss without triggering standard pediatric blood screens. That's why I've been risking my life sneaking to that window every night. I've been feeding them clean rye bread and activated charcoal broths to absorb the toxins and keep their organs from failing!"

Calvin’s face went pale. "That explains why the girls looked completely malnourished despite the endless food supply. Hilda was starving them and poisoning them simultaneously."

"Do you have proof, Sarah?" I asked, my voice turning dead cold as my instincts shifted into pure tactical focus. "If we call the authorities right now without concrete evidence, Richard's high-priced legal team will stall the investigation while Hilda destroys everything."

Sarah pulled a small, weather-beaten leather journal from her bag and handed it to me.

"This was Elena’s personal diary," Sarah said. "She started suspecting Richard and Hilda three weeks before her death. She recorded her symptoms, her doubts, and included hidden receipts showing offshore transfers from Richard’s corporate accounts directly to Hilda Dawson's private bank in Grand Cayman."

I flipped open the yellowed pages. The refined, elegant handwriting was undeniably Elena’s. Page after page detailed her growing physical weakness, her discovery of unfamiliar vials hidden in the kitchen, and her desperate decision to hide copy key documents inside a private safe deposit box in downtown Nashville.

"There's more," Sarah added. "Hilda keeps the concentrated digitalis extract hidden on the property. She keeps it behind a false wall inside her personal bathroom in the east wing."

Before I could answer, Calvin's encrypted radio chimed with a series of quick double-beeps. He looked at the screen, and his jaw tightened.

"Marcus, we have a crisis," Calvin reported. "The guard at the main nursery just pinged me. Richard Miller himself just pulled up to the front entrance gate with two black SUVs full of private security guards and Dr. Julian Vance. They have an emergency order from a county judge granting them immediate custody of the children."
