Chapter 5 - Midnight Siege

"They’re moving faster than we anticipated," I said, slamming the diary shut. "Hilda must have notified Richard the moment she locked us in the cellar."

"We can't let them breach the main house," Calvin said, pulling his radio to mobilize his full outer tactical detail. "If Richard steps inside with a signed court order, my men legally can't engage his security without triggering a massive law enforcement response."

"No," I interjected, stopping Calvin’s arm. "Let them in."

Calvin stared at me in disbelief. "Marcus, if Richard gets physical possession of the girls under a court order, his lawyers will tie you up in legal appeals for months while your daughters remain in their care."

"He thinks he holds all the cards because he believes I'm trapped underground in that storm cellar," I said, my voice dripping with cold determination. "He's walking straight into a trap of his own making. Sarah, you're coming with us. Tonight, we expose every single one of them."

Using the narrow maintenance passages built behind the grand hall, we slipped back inside the main residence undetected. Calvin dispatched two of his operators to breach Hilda’s quarters and recover the hidden digitalis vials, while Sarah, Calvin, and I took up positions on the second-floor balcony overlooking the grand foyer.

Downstairs, the heavy double oak entrance doors swung open with a resounding bang.

Richard Miller stepped into the marble foyer, dressed in an expensive charcoal suit, holding a leather folder. Beside him stood Dr. Julian Vance and four muscular, suit-wearing private security guards. Hilda was already standing at the base of the staircase, waiting for them with an expression of quiet triumph.

"Where is Marcus Alvarez?" Richard announced loudly, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "I am holding an emergency protection order issued by the Davidson County Family Court. Marcus Alvarez is mentally incapacitated and poses an immediate threat to his children. As their legal uncle, I am executing immediate physical custody."

"Mr. Alvarez is currently unavailable, Mr. Miller," Hilda answered smoothly, her tone filled with fake sorrow. "I believe he has suffered a severe psychological collapse down in the basement level."

"Is that right, Hilda?"

My voice cut through the silence like a gunshot from the top of the grand marble staircase.

Richard, Hilda, and Dr. Vance whipped their heads upward in absolute shock as I stepped into the light, flanked by Calvin and Sarah.

Richard’s eyes bulged as he recognized the woman standing beside me. "Sarah?! What... what the hell are you doing here? You were supposed to be—"

"Dead? Out of the picture?" Sarah stepped to the balcony railing, her voice steady and ringing with fury. "I know everything, Richard. I know what you did to my sister, and I know what you and Hilda have been doing to Elena’s precious little girls!"
