Chapter 8 - Reclaiming the Light

The sun was setting over the hills of Tuscany, casting a brilliant crimson and gold light over the sprawling vineyards.

The car pulled up to a magnificent stone villa nestled on top of a rolling hill, surrounded by olive trees and blooming lavender gardens. It was a place far removed from the cold marble walls and armed guards of the Duca fortress in the city.

Sophia looked out the window, her eyes wide with awe. "Alessandro... what is this place?"

"This was my family's original home," Alessandro said, stepping out of the car and opening the door for them. "Before the wars. Before the business took over everything. My father bought this land when he married my mother."

He walked them up the stone path toward the front porch, where the doors stood wide open, revealing bright, warm rooms filled with natural light and wooden furniture.

"I sold the estate in the city last month," Alessandro explained, turning to face Sophia. "The shipping companies have been legally restructured into legitimate commercial transport firms. The syndicate is gone, Sophia. It's finished."

Sophia gasped, bringing her hands to her mouth. "You walked away from all of it?"

"I spent sixteen years living in a prison built out of fear," Alessandro said, looking down at Emma, who was already chasing a butterfly across the green grass of the lawn. "I thought holding power was the only way to stay alive. But power doesn't protect you from the dark. Light does."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a leather binder, handing it to Sophia.

She opened it. Inside were legal deeds, trust funds, and property titles written in her name and Emma's.

"This villa belongs to you and Emma," Alessandro said softly. "Julian’s name has been completely cleared by the state. A trust fund has been established for Emma that will guarantee her education, her future, and anything she ever needs for the rest of her life. You will never have to run again. You will never have to hide."

Tears welled up in Sophia's eyes, spilling down her cheeks. "Alessandro... this is too much. We can't accept this—"

"You gave me back my father's memory," Alessandro interrupted, his voice thick with emotion. "You gave me back my life. This isn't charity, Sophia. It’s justice."

Emma came running back across the grass, giggling as she tripped slightly over her fluffy shoes, landing right against Alessandro’s knees. Alessandro caught her effortlessly, picking her up into his arms.

"Mr. Boss Man!" Emma giggled, bopping him on the nose with her soft rabbit. "Is this our new house?"

"It’s your house, Emma," Alessandro smiled, adjusting her in his arms. "And there are no dark rooms behind the walls here. Just sunshine and big gardens."

"Are you staying too?" she asked, looking at him with her big, innocent eyes.

Alessandro looked at Sophia, who was wiping away her tears, offering him a warm, hopeful smile.

"If your mom doesn't mind," Alessandro said softly, "I’d like to visit often. Someone has to teach you how to build proper wooden towers."

Emma clapped her hands happily. "Yay! And you can drink coffee with us every morning!"

Alessandro laughed—a deep, joyful sound that echoed across the quiet Tuscan countryside, entirely free of shadow.
