Chapter 7 - The Trial of Shadows

Six months later.
The high-profile trial of Matteo Reachi and the remnants of the Moretti Syndicate had gripped the nation. It was hailed as the biggest anti-mafia crackdown in three decades.
Because of the overwhelming evidence provided anonymously to the authorities, the syndicate’s infrastructure collapsed like a house of cards. Dozens of corrupt officials were exposed, shipping lanes were seized, and the reign of terror that had plagued the region for generations was systematically dismantled.
Inside a secure, private courtroom in Milan, Alessandro sat in the back row, dressed in a sharp black suit. Beside him sat Sophia, dressed elegantly in a navy blue dress, holding Emma on her lap.
At the defense table, Matteo Reachi looked like a shell of his former self. His hair was completely white now, his face hollow, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit. He sat in handcuffs, surrounded by four armed guards.
The judge slammed his heavy wooden gavel onto the desk.
"On the charges of grand conspiracy, illegal arms trafficking, the murder of Julian Alvarez, and the murder of Giovanni Duca... this court finds the defendant, Matteo Reachi, GUILTY on all counts."
Gavel struck again. BANG.
"The defendant is sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served in solitary confinement at the Opera Maximum Security Facility."
Matteo didn't speak. As the guards pulled him up to lead him through the side door to the holding cells, he slowly turned his head. His dark, sunken eyes swept across the courtroom until they landed on Alessandro.
And then, his gaze shifted to the three-year-old girl sitting beside him.
Emma looked right back at him. She didn't flinch. She didn't hide behind her mother. She simply held her gray stuffed rabbit close to her chest and watched as the silver-haired man was dragged away into the dark hallway, the heavy steel door slamming shut behind him forever.
Outside the courthouse, dozens of journalists and news cameras were gathered, waiting for statements.
Alessandro, Sophia, and Emma stepped out through a private side exit into a quiet courtyard where a sleek black limousine was waiting. Marco was standing by the open door, a warm smile on his face.
"It's over, Boss," Marco said softly.

Alessandro looked up at the clear blue sky. For the first time in sixteen years, the air felt light. The crushing weight that had pressed down on his chest since he was twenty-two years old was finally gone.
"Not yet," Alessandro said. He turned to Sophia. "Come with me. There’s one more place we need to go."
