Chapter 10 - The Quiet Morning

The evening arrived with a breathtaking sunset that painted the sky in deep shades of purple, orange, and rose.
Dinner had finished, and the estate settled into a tranquil, soothing stillness. The crickets chirped softly in the lavender bushes, and a gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the old olive trees.
Inside the cozy living room, a soft lamp burned on the side table. Sophia was sitting in a comfortable armchair, reading a book, her face serene in the warm light.
Alessandro sat on the plush rug near the window, sitting cross-legged. Beside him, Emma was fast asleep, her head resting comfortably on his lap, her small fingers still loosely holding the frayed ear of her gray stuffed rabbit. Her breathing was steady, peaceful, and entirely safe.
Alessandro looked down at the little girl who had walked into his dark world two years ago with eleven words that changed everything.
Check your coffee, sir.
She had saved his physical life that morning, but in the months that followed, she had saved his soul. She had broken down the thick, impenetrable walls he had spent sixteen years building around his heart. She had taught him that true strength wasn't found in weapons, fear, or absolute control—it was found in love, in trust, and in protecting the people who matter most.
Marco tapped softly on the open glass door leading from the patio, leaning against the frame with a quiet smile.
"All quiet on the perimeter, Alessandro," Marco whispered softly. "Night watch is set. You should get some rest."
"Thanks, Marco," Alessandro whispered back. "Goodnight."
Marco nodded and quietly slipped away into the twilight.
Sophia set her book down and looked over at Alessandro and Emma. She walked over, kneeling quietly beside them, brushing a stray dark curl away from her daughter's forehead.
"She loves you so much, Alessandro," Sophia whispered, her eyes shining with warmth. "You gave her a real home. A real life."
"She gave me a reason to live one," Alessandro replied gently, meeting Sophia's gaze.
In that quiet, beautiful moment, standing under the roof of a house filled with light, laughter, and security, Alessandro Duca knew the war was truly over. The ghost of his father was finally at rest. The dark legacy of the mafia was buried forever beneath the Tuscan earth.
He slowly leaned his head back against the cushion, looking out the window at the endless sea of stars filling the night sky.

He had no fortress. He had no army. He had no power in the shadows.
And for the first time in his life, he was completely, beautifully free.
