Chapter 4 - The Hidden Chamber

The air inside the hidden passage behind the library bookcase smelled of dust, old gun oil, and cold copper.

Alessandro walked down the narrow stone stairs, a tactical flashlight in his left hand and his gun drawn in his right. Marco followed closely behind, two heavy assault rifles slung over his shoulders.

The room was empty—or so it seemed at first glance. Racks that once held high-grade military rifles were bare. Ammunition crates were thrown open, their contents looted. Matteo had cleaned out his personal stash before attempting the assassination.

"He took the high-yield explosives and the encrypted satellite comms," Marco reported, scanning the empty shelves with his light. "He was planning a war, Alessandro. Not an escape."

Alessandro didn't answer. He walked toward the far corner of the subterranean room, where a heavy steel desk sat against the damp stone wall. On top of the desk was a single, unlit laptop, its screen cracked, connected to a small black drive.

"Don't touch it!" Marco warned. "Could be rigged."

Alessandro knelt down, inspecting the wires with meticulous care. "It's not a trap. It's a transfer node. He was wiping the drive remotely, but he got interrupted when the alarms went off."

Alessandro pulled a specialized flash drive from his pocket—a tool designed by his tech team—and plugged it into the terminal. The screen flickered to life, code scrolling rapidly down the blue background.

"Recovering fragmented files," a digital voice beeped from the device.

Within moments, a list of names, bank accounts, and geographic coordinates filled the display. Alessandro’s eyes narrowed as he scanned the documents.

Matteo hadn't been working alone.

For sixteen years, Matteo had been feeding internal Duca intelligence to the Moretti Syndicate—the rival family operating out of the northern ports. The very family Alessandro had fought a bloody four-year war against in his late twenties. The war that had cost Alessandro dozens of men and nearly destroyed his shipping empire had been orchestrated from the inside by Matteo.

"Look at this," Alessandro said, pointing to a recent file dated just three days ago.

It was a contract. A hit order. But the target wasn't just Alessandro.

It was a list of every high-ranking loyalist in the Duca organization—including Marco—and at the very bottom of the page, written in bold red font:

TARGET: Sophia Alvarez & Emma Alvarez (Terminate immediately upon discovery).

"He knew who they were," Marco whispered, a chill running down his spine. "Matteo knew Sophia was Julian's wife the moment she got hired here."

"He was using them," Alessandro realized, his voice trembling with dark fury. "He let Sophia work here so he could keep an eye on them. He was going to kill me with the poison, blame it on Sophia as 'revenge for her husband', and then execute her and the child to close the loop permanently. It was a perfect frame job."

"Boss," Marco said urgently. "If Matteo knows who they are, and he's now partnered openly with the Morettis, he won't just run. He's going to come back to finish the job. He can't leave the child alive—she can identify him, and she connects him directly to Julian's murder."

Alessandro shut the laptop with a heavy snap. The darkness of the hidden room seemed to fold around him, but inside his chest, a fire that had been cold for sixteen years burned white-hot.

"He won't get the chance," Alessandro said, his tone icy and absolute. "We aren't hiding in this estate anymore, Marco."

"What are your orders?"

"Move Sophia and Emma to the mountain safehouse in Bellagio—the one no one knows about except you and me. Station twenty of our best men around the perimeter. I want a perimeter that a fly couldn't cross without being shot."

"And you, Boss?" Marco asked. "Where will you be?"

Alessandro picked up a heavy tactical vest from the floor and strapped it across his chest.

"I'm going to hunt down the Morettis," Alessandro said, loading a fresh magazine into his pistol. "And when Matteo shows his face... I’m going to personally deliver the answer to my father's murder."
