Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

Two years passed.
Autumn returned once more to Federal Hill, painting the sprawling grounds of the Moretti estate in brilliant shades of crimson, gold, and deep orange.
It was a special morning. Five-year-old Lucas stood in the grand marble foyer—the very hall where he had walked two years ago in moon-printed pajamas carrying a crumpled letter.
Today, he wore a crisp blue school uniform, a small dark tie, and a dark leather backpack slung over his shoulders. His hair was neatly combed, his gray-blue eyes bright with a mix of excitement and nervous energy.
Alessandro knelt in front of his son, carefully adjusting the collar of the boy's jacket.
"Are you ready for your first day of school, Lucas?" Alessandro asked, his voice full of pride.
Lucas nodded bravely, though his small hands nervously clutched the straps of his backpack. "Is Marco coming with us?"
"Marco will drive the car," Alessandro smiled, "but I am walking you right up to the classroom door myself."
"And... and will you stay until the bell rings?"
Alessandro reached into his pocket and pulled out a small object. It was a beautiful antique gold pocket watch, suspended from a heavy chain, engraved with the lion crest of the Moretti family—the heirloom that had belonged to his own father.
He placed the gold watch into Lucas’s small palm, closing the boy's fingers around it.
"You keep this in your pocket today," Alessandro said gently. "Every time you look at it, remember that your dad is thinking about you. And the moment the clock strikes three... I will be standing right outside your classroom gate waiting for you."
Lucas looked down at the bright, heavy gold in his hand, then looked up into his father's eyes. The nervous shadow vanished from his face, replaced by a radiant, confident smile.
"Okay, Daddy!" Lucas chirped, carefully tucking the watch into his jacket pocket, right next to his heart.
They walked out of the mansion together, holding hands as they descended the grand marble steps into the crisp, sunlit morning air.
Marco held the rear door of the sedan open, bowing slightly as the young master climbed inside. "Good luck today, Master Lucas."
"Thank you, Marco!" Lucas called out happily.

As the car rolled smoothly through the iron gates of the estate, Alessandro looked back at the grand stone house. He remembered the cold, lonely morning when a tiny boy in moon pajamas had handed him an envelope that changed his life forever.
The dark legacy of vengeance, blood, and fear was over. In its place, a new story had been written—one forged in love, protection, and the unbreakable bond between a father and his son.
