Chapter 7 - The Dawn of a New Era

Six months passed, bringing a gentle, warm spring to the city.
The scandal surrounding the sudden departure and financial collapse of the Vance family was the talk of high society for a few weeks, but in the fast-paced world of politics and crime, new news quickly replaced the old. The Moretti syndicate was stronger than ever, its control over the ports and banking sectors now absolute and unchallenged.
Yet, inside the iron gates of the Moretti estate, the atmosphere had transformed entirely.
The cold, austere mansion that had once struck terror into the hearts of visitors was now filled with the cheerful sounds of childhood. Toys were scattered across the polished marble hallway; colorful crayon drawings were framed and hung proudly alongside multi-million-dollar renaissance paintings; and the large courtyard gardens were frequently filled with the sound of laughter.
Alessandro had changed as well. He still commanded the vast operations of his business with an iron hand, but his lieutenants quickly learned that no meeting, no contract, and no crisis was important enough to interrupt his four o'clock afternoon tea with his son.
On a warm May afternoon, Marco walked into the study carrying a leather briefcase.
Alessandro sat behind his desk, but he wasn't reading financial reports. He was carefully helping four-year-old Lucas build a massive wooden castle on the middle of the Persian rug.
"Boss," Marco said, a rare, warm smile appearing on his scarred face. "The final transfer papers for the new children's hospital in Astoria just came through. It’s officially named the Claire Mendes Memorial Hospital."
Alessandro looked up, his eyes bright with deep satisfaction. "Is the foundation fully funded?"
"Fifty million dollars deposited into the trust today," Marco confirmed. "Free medical care for any single mother or underprivileged child in the three boroughs. Exactly as you wanted."
Lucas looked up from his wooden blocks, holding up a small toy knight. "Daddy, is Mommy's hospital big?"
Alessandro slid off his chair, sitting down cross-legged on the rug beside his son, pulling the little boy into a warm side-hug. "It’s very big, Lucas. It’s going to help thousands of little boys and their mamas."
"Mommy would like that," Lucas said thoughtfully, his gray-blue eyes shining with sweetness.
"Yes, she would, little one," Alessandro murmured softly.
Marco set the briefcase on the desk, looking down at the father and son. "By the way, boss... the council of captains is asking about the annual summer gala. They want to know if you're hosting it at the estate this year."
Alessandro looked around his study—at the sunshine streaming through the tall windows, at his son’s toys, at the framed picture of Claire sitting on his desk.
"Tell them the gala is canceled," Alessandro declared smoothly.
Marco blinked in surprise. "Canceled? Boss, we’ve hosted the summer gala for twenty years."
"Tell them," Alessandro smiled, a rich, happy expression that made him look ten years younger, "that the Moretti estate is no longer available for business parties. We are taking a family vacation to Italy instead. Lucas needs to see where his grandfather built our family name."

Lucas clapped his small hands in excitement. "An airplane, Daddy?! Do we go on a big airplane?!"
"The biggest airplane in the sky, my boy," Alessandro laughed, scooping the child up and tossing him gently into the air, making Lucas burst into delighted giggles.
