Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Three months later.

The autumn sun shone brightly over the rolling green lawn of the Moretti estate. The Japanese maple Sofia had planted years ago burned in brilliant shades of red and gold against the crisp sky.

I stood on the back patio, watching Matteo chase a golden retriever puppy across the grass, his laughter echoing through the air—a sound that used to feel like an impossible dream in the dark corridors of the hospital.

Beside me stood Vane, holding a leather folder.

"The legit transition is complete, boss," Vane reported smoothly. "All syndicate assets have been liquidated or converted into legitimate commercial real estate, shipping, and medical research foundations. The Moretti name is completely clean. The authorities have closed their files."

"Good," I said, taking a sip of coffee. "And Dominic?"

"Sentenced yesterday," Vane replied. "Life without parole in a maximum-security facility. He won't ever see the light of day."

"Let him fade into memory," I said, handing the folder back to Vane. "Thank you, Vane. For everything. You're free to take your payout and retire wherever you like."

Vane smiled, shaking my hand warmly. "It was an honor, Mr. Moretti. Take care of your family."

As Vane walked away, Elena stepped out onto the patio, carrying two fresh slices of red velvet cake on small ceramic plates.

"You know," I said with a light chuckle as she handed me a plate, "I used to think this recipe was just a sweet treat Sofia made to keep me happy."

"It was," Elena smiled, sitting down on the bench beside me. "Sofia loved you deeply, Luca. She built this whole plan not just to save Matteo, but to give you a way out of the darkness. She wanted you to have a real life—a life where you didn't have to carry a gun to protect the people you love."

I looked at Elena, taking in her radiant smile, her sharp intelligence, and the unconditional love she had shown my son when he needed it most.

"Sofia was a genius," I said softly, setting my plate down and taking Elena’s hands in mine. "She knew exactly what she was doing. She knew that after she was gone, I would need someone strong, someone brave, someone who could remind me what it means to be human."

Elena looked into my eyes, her heart beating fast. "And did you find that person, Luca?"

"I'm looking at her," I answered.
