Chapter 1 - The Dead’s Confession

The air in the hallway turned to ice. My grip on Elena’s wrist tightened, every instinct forged in the brutal underbelly of Chicago screaming that this was either a trap or a miracle. Elena didn’t flinch. Her dark eyes held mine with an unyielding calm that terrified me far more than an armed assassin ever could.

"Say that again," I rasped, my voice barely above a whisper, yet lethal enough to stop the heart of any man in the city.

"Sofia knew," Elena repeated softly, leaning in so only I could hear. "She knew the poison wasn't meant for her. It was meant for you. But when she realized what was in her glass that night, she drank it herself to protect you—and to give herself enough time to hide the truth."

My pulse hammered against my ribs like a sledgehammer. I let go of her wrist, taking a half-step back as if I’d been struck. The sealed envelope in her hand seemed to burn through the dim light of the estate. The delicate cursive on the front—For Matteo—open only when Luca has lost all hope—was unmistakably my wife’s.

"Where did you get this?" I demanded, gesturing to my guards, who immediately moved in to surround us. "Sofia’s recipe was locked in a safe only three people knew existed. How do you have her letter? Who sent you?"

"Sofia did," Elena said simply, looking down at Matteo, who was hungrily eating another bite of the red velvet cake. For the first time in three agonizing months, color was returning to my son's pale cheeks. "Two days before she died, she came to me. She told me that if the day ever came where Matteo’s heart began to fail and the doctors gave up, I was to bring this cake and this letter to your fortress."

"Matteo’s heart is failing because of a congenital defect!" I snapped, though my own words sounded hollow to my ears. "Dr. Pierce confirmed it!"

"Dr. Pierce is lying to you, Mr. Moretti," Elena said coldly. "Matteo isn't dying of natural heart failure. He is being poisoned. The exact same micro-toxin that killed Sofia is currently running through your son’s veins."

A suffocating silence descended upon the corridor. My men looked at one another in sheer terror. If what she was saying was true, someone inside my inner circle—someone with access to my son, his doctors, and my home—was systematically murdering my family while I stood by, helpless.

"Prove it," I breathed, my hand falling back to the concealed piece in my suit jacket.

"The cake," Elena explained, pointing to the plate. "Sofia was a brilliant chemist before she married you, Luca. You knew that. What you didn't know was that she formulated a natural counter-agent to the micro-toxin. The secret ingredient in her red velvet cake isn't spices—it's a neutralizing compound disguised in the cocoa. Look at your son."

I looked.

Matteo’s tiny hands were no longer trembling. His breathing, usually ragged and shallow, was deep and steady. He looked up at me with bright, alert eyes, wiping crumbs off his chin. "Daddy... no more pain," he whimpered softly, reaching out his little arms toward me.

Tears pricked the back of my eyes, but the burning rage in my chest instantly incinerated them. I dropped to my knees, holding Matteo tightly against my chest, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart against my collarbone.

"Elena," I said, my voice dripping with dangerous promise as I stood back up and faced her. "If you are playing a game with me, I will burn Chicago to the ground with you in it."

"I am not playing, Luca," she replied softly. "Break the seal on your wife’s letter. Read what she wrote before her killer realizes I am here."

I tore the envelope open with shaking fingers. Sofia's writing filled the page, written in dark blue ink.

My beloved Luca, If you are reading this, it means our sweet Matteo is in grave danger, and you have finally reached the edge of despair. I am so sorry I had to leave you both, but my death was the only way to buy time.

The man who is trying to destroy our family sits at your right hand. He believes he can break your heart, strip you of your power, and inherit the Moretti empire once you have nothing left to live for. He is using Dr. Pierce to slowly administer the toxin to Matteo under the guise of medical treatment.

Trust Elena. She is the sister I never told you about—the one person who can save our boy. Do not trust the men you call brothers. The traitor is—

The rest of the sentence was smeared with dried blood, renderable into nothing more than smudge marks. The name of the killer had been intentionally obscured or cut off.

"Who?" I roared, grabbing the paper. "Who is it?!"

Before Elena could answer, the heavy wooden doors of the estate burst open. Dominic, my most trusted lieutenant and childhood friend, rushed into the foyer, flanked by four armed enforcers.

"Luca!" Dominic shouted, his breath ragged, his eyes darting frantically from Elena to the cake on the table. "We just got a trace on this woman! She's an imposter! Dr. Pierce just called—he says she slipped into the hospital earlier and tampered with Matteo's bloodwork! Stand back, I'll handle her!"

Dominic drew his weapon, pointing it directly at Elena's chest.

Elena didn't move an inch. She simply looked at me, her gaze steady and unwavering. "The trap is sprung, Luca. What are you going to do?"
