Chapter 8 - War for the Empire

The dismantling of the Valenti syndicate was swift, brutal, and absolute.

Over the next two weeks, the combined force of Sofia's rock-solid evidence and my remaining loyal enforcers completely purged Chicago of every traitor, every corrupt politician, and every foreign operative who had dared to touch my family.

The underworld learned a lesson that would be remembered for generations: Luca Moretti was not a man to be crossed, but a father fighting for his son was an unstoppable force of nature.

Yet, as the smoke cleared across the city, I found myself standing in the grand foyer of my estate, feeling an unfamiliar sensation.

Silence.

The gunfire was gone. The threats were gone. The syndicate was destroyed.

For the first time in fifteen years, the empire was completely quiet.

"Daddy!"

A joyful voice echoed down the grand staircase.

I looked up to see Matteo running down the steps two at a time, his cheeks rosy, his body full of boundless, childhood energy. He ran straight into my arms, laughing as I swung him around in the air.

"Look, Daddy! Look what Elena showed me!"

He held up a small green sprout planted in a small clay pot.

"It's from Mommy's tree," Elena said, stepping out onto the landing above. She was dressed in a soft sweater, her hair falling loosely around her shoulders. The sharp, guarded look she had carried when she first walked into my house was completely gone, replaced by a gentle warmth. "We took a cutting from the Japanese maple outside. Matteo wants to grow his own."

I looked down at my son, then up at Elena.

"Thank you," I said softly.

"For the plant?" Elena smiled, walking down the stairs to stand beside us.

"For everything," I replied, my voice sincere. "You saved his life. You saved mine, too."

"Sofia gave me a job to do," Elena said, her eyes meeting mine with deep emotion. "But being here... watching Matteo grow... it wasn't just a mission, Luca. He's my family now, too."

Matteo looked between the two of us, his little hand reaching out to grab Elena's fingers while his other hand held onto mine. "Elena stay?" he asked in his innocent three-year-old voice. "Elena stay with us forever?"

Elena looked at me, waiting for my reaction.

May you like

I reached out, placing my hand over hers and Matteo's. "Only if she wants to," I said softly.

Elena smiled, a single tear of happiness slipping down her cheek. "I'm not going anywhere."
