Chapter 5 - Fire and Betrayal

The world spun into chaos. The airbags deployed with a deafening pop, filled the cabin with white smoke and the harsh smell of chemicals.

"Elena! Matteo!" I coughed, forcing my battered door open with my shoulder.

"We're... we're okay!" Elena called out from the back. She had threw her own body over Matteo, shielding him from the violent impact. Matteo was crying, terrified, but unharmed.

"Out! Move, now!" I yelled, pulling them both from the wreckage.

Rain instantly soaked us as we scrambled into the dense forest. Behind us, headlight beams cut through the storm as two armed vehicles came to a halt on the shoulder above. Heavy boots hit the mud.

"Search the wreckage! Kill anything that breathes!" a voice shouted from above.

I grabbed Elena by the arm, guiding her through the blinding rain toward a dark stone structure visible through the trees—the iron gates of Sofia's family estate were less than two hundred yards away.

"Can you run?" I asked Elena.

"I can run," she said, her teeth clenched against the pain in her wounded arm. She scooped Matteo into her arms, keeping him tucked securely beneath her heavy coat. "Go! I'm right behind you!"

We ducked through the treeline as mercenaries descended the hill, firing blindly into the brush. Bullets snapped through the leaves above our heads.

I turned around, kneeling behind an ancient oak tree, and raised my weapon. I took two calm, calculated breaths, letting the cold fury of the Moretti bloodline take complete control.

One. A mercenary stepped into the moonlight. I pulled the trigger. He dropped instantly. Two. A second shooter rushed forward to cover his comrade. My second round found its mark.

The remaining three mercenaries retreated behind their vehicles, terrified to advance into the dark woods against a man who had earned his reputation in the violent streets of Chicago.

"Luca!" Elena called out from the estate gate. "I have the code! Hurry!"

I dropped my empty magazine, slammed a fresh one into place, and sprinted toward the iron gate. Elena punched a eight-digit code into a rusted brass keypad set into the stone pillar. With a heavy groan of mechanical gears, the hidden iron door swung open, revealing a lit underground tunnel leading beneath the main house.

We slipped inside, and Elena slammed the heavy steel door shut, engaging three massive manual deadbolts.

The muffled sound of gunfire echoed outside against the thick iron, but the doors held firm.

We fell against the cold concrete wall of the tunnel, gasping for air. Matteo snuggled tightly into my chest, his small hands holding onto my wet collar.

"We made it," Elena whispered, her face pale from blood loss.

"Not yet," I said, looking down the long, dimly lit corridor. "Where is the vault?"

"At the end of this tunnel," Elena said, taking a deep breath. "Sofia built it herself. It contains the chemical formulas, the evidence against the Valenti family, and the final ingredient for Matteo's permanent cure."

She looked up at me, her dark eyes filled with a mixture of pain and relief. "And it's also where Sofia left her final gift to you."
