Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

One year later.
The church bells of St. Michael’s Cathedral rang joyfully across the city of Chicago.
Inside, sunlight streamed through gorgeous stained-glass windows, illuminating rows of fresh white roses. Friends, legitimate business partners, and family gathered in celebration.
I stood at the altar in a tailored black tuxedo, my heart racing with a nervous joy I hadn't felt in a lifetime. Standing beside me as my best man was four-year-old Matteo, wearing a tiny matching tuxedo, proudly holding a velvet pillow with two gleaming gold wedding bands.
"You ready, big guy?" I whispered down to him.
Matteo gave me a bright, confident thumbs-up. "Ready, Daddy!"
The organ swelled into a powerful, beautiful melody.
The heavy oak doors at the back of the cathedral opened wide.
Elena walked down the aisle, breathtaking in an elegant lace gown that flowed like water around her. She carried a bouquet of red roses and sprigs from the Japanese maple tree. Her eyes were locked onto mine, radiant with love, happiness, and profound peace.
As her father walked her to the altar and placed her hand in mine, I leaned in and whispered, "You look incredible."
"And you look like a man who finally found his way home," she whispered back, her smile lighting up the entire cathedral.
The priest began the ceremony, his words echoing softly through the sacred hall. As we exchanged our vows, promising to love, honor, and protect each other through every storm life might bring, I felt a deep, soothing warmth fill my chest.
Sofia’s memory was no longer a shadow of grief—it was a bright light that had guided us through the darkness toward this exact moment.
"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the priest declared with a smile. "You may kiss the bride!"
I pulled Elena close, kissing her deeply as the congregation erupted into joyful applause. Matteo jumped up and down, clapping his little hands and shouting with pure joy.
Hand in hand, Elena, Matteo, and I walked down the aisle together, stepping out of the cathedral and into the warm, golden sunlight of a new day.

The nightmare was over. The violence was finished.
We were no longer running from the shadows of the past. We were walking together into a long, healthy, and happy future—a family bound not just by blood, but by love, courage, and hope.
