Chapter 5 - The Trial of the Century

The courtroom of the New York Supreme Court was packed to maximum capacity. Journalists from every major global network sat shoulder-to-shoulder, their laptops open, ready to broadcast the final verdict of the Sterling-Manor attempted murder trial.
Vanessa sat at the defense table, wearing a drab, gray prison jumpsuit. The months in solitary confinement had stripped away her beauty and glamour. Her hair was dull, her face hollowed out, and her arrogant smirk was replaced by a hollow, terrified stare. Sitting next to her was her mother, Eleanor, whose own empire had collapsed after Daniel’s financial exposure led to federal indictments for money laundering.
On the other side of the courtroom sat Daniel, his arm still in a sling from the gunshot wound, his posture commanding and unyielding. Beside him was Sarah, looking radiant and elegant in a simple navy blue dress. She held herself with a quiet dignity that commanded the respect of everyone in the room.
The prosecution’s closing arguments were devastating. They presented the unedited security footage, the ballistic reports from the hospital shooting, and the testimony of the household staff who had finally broken their silence under Daniel’s protection.
The judge, a stern woman with a reputation for zero tolerance against violent crime, banged her gavel. "Will the defendant please stand?"
Vanessa stood up, her knees visibly shaking.
"Vanessa Vance, you have been found guilty on all counts, including attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault on a pregnant woman, corporate fraud, and conspiracy to kidnap a minor," the judge announced, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "Your actions demonstrate a complete lack of humanity, driven by greed and pathological malice. Therefore, I sentence you to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole."
A collective gasp went through the courtroom, followed by a wave of applause from the gallery.
Vanessa collapsed into her chair, burying her face in her hands as she finally realized the gravity of her fate. She would spend the rest of her days in a maximum-security prison cell, forgotten by the high society she had desperate tried to rule.
As the officers led Vanessa away in chains, she looked back one last time at Daniel and Sarah. But neither of them looked at her. They had already turned their backs on the past.

Outside the courthouse, a sea of microphones and cameras awaited them. Journalists shouted questions, asking how they felt about the verdict.
Daniel stepped up to the microphone, his arm wrapping protectively around Sarah’s waist. "Today, justice was served. But our focus is no longer on the destruction caused by malice. Our focus is on rebuilding a future filled with love, security, and family. The Sterling legacy belongs to those who build, not those who destroy."
