Chapter 4 - The Final Counterstrike

The public execution of Vanessa’s reputation forced her into hiding, but a rat trapped in a corner is always the most dangerous.

It was a stormy Tuesday night when Leo was finally cleared to leave the NICU. Sarah carried her son, wrapped in a plush blue blanket, while Daniel carried the diaper bag, surrounded by four heavily armed private security guards. They walked out of the hospital’s secure rear exit toward a waiting armored SUV.

Suddenly, a delivery van swerved into the loading dock, blocking their path.

The side doors flew open, and three men wearing ski masks jumped out. They didn't target Daniel; they targeted the security guards, deploying high-voltage stun guns that dropped two of the guards instantly.

"Get in the car!" Daniel roared, pushing Sarah toward the SUV while drawing a licensed firearm from his jacket.

But out of the shadows of the delivery van stepped Vanessa. She no longer looked like a high-society heiress. Her eyes were bloodshot, her clothes disheveled, and in her hand, she held a compact, military-grade pistol. Her face was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated madness.

"If I can't have the Sterling legacy, no one will!" Vanessa shrieked over the howling wind. She pointed the gun directly at Sarah—specifically at the bundle in Sarah’s arms. "You took my life, Sarah! You took Daniel! Now I take yours!"

BANG!

A gunshot echoed through the concrete loading dock.

Sarah screamed, closing her eyes and throwing her body over Leo to shield him. But the bullet didn't hit her.

Daniel had thrown himself in front of her. The bullet tore through his shoulder, the force of the impact spinning him around. He collapsed against the side of the SUV, his gun slipping from his fingers as blood began to soak through his shirt.

"Daniel!" Sarah cried, her voice cracking with despair.

Vanessa laughed, a high-pitched, psychotic sound. She stepped closer, raising the gun again, aiming directly at Sarah’s head. "Goodbye, ghost."

Before she could pull the trigger, the sound of screeching tires broke the air. Two unmarked black SUVs tore into the loading dock. It wasn't just Daniel’s security—it was the FBI’s elite tactical unit, who had been tracking Vanessa’s financial transactions for domestic terrorism and kidnapping plots.

"Drop your weapon! Now!" a voice boomed through a megaphone.

Vanessa spun around, firing wildly at the federal agents. A hail of non-lethal rubber bullets and a flashbang grenade erupted in front of her. The explosion threw Vanessa backward onto the hard asphalt, the gun flying from her grip. Within seconds, tactical officers swarmed her, pinning her to the ground.

"It’s over, Vanessa. You’re done," the lead agent said, slamming her face against the wet concrete.

Sarah didn't look at Vanessa. She dropped to her knees beside Daniel, tears streaming down her face. "Daniel, please, stay awake. Look at me. Leo is safe. We’re safe."

Daniel looked up, his face pale from blood loss, but a faint, triumphant smile touched his lips. "I told you... she would never... hurt you again." His eyes fluttered shut as the medical staff rushed out of the hospital doors toward them.
