Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Citadel

The pristine, sterile smell of St. Jude’s Hospital offered no comfort to Daniel as he paced the length of the private waiting wing. It had been four hours since Sarah had been rushed into the emergency operating room for an immediate C-section. The red "In Progress" light above the double doors felt like a mocking eye.

The heavy silence was broken by the sharp click of leather shoes. Marcus, Daniel’s most trusted attorney and head of security, approached with a thick manila folder under his arm. His face was grim.

"Sir, we have a problem," Marcus said, speaking in a low tone. "Vanessa’s lawyers are already moving. Because her family holds a significant share in Sterling Enterprises, they are trying to claim the security footage was doctored. They’ve leaked a narrative to the press claiming Sarah was an unstable ex-employee who broke into the manor to extort you."

Daniel’s jaw tightened so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "Let them try. What about the backup drive?"

"Secured," Marcus replied. "But Vanessa’s mother, Eleanor, just landed from Europe. She’s threatening to pull all international funding from our upcoming tech launch if the charges aren't dropped. She’s calling it a 'domestic misunderstanding'."

"A misunderstanding?" Daniel turned on Marcus, his eyes blazing with fury. "She stepped on the hand of a pregnant woman. She tried to kill my child. Tell Eleanor that if she breathes a word against Sarah, I will personally release the financial audit of her European shell companies. Let’s see how the board reacts when they find out Eleanor has been laundering money for the past five years."

Marcus blinked, surprised by the sheer ruthlessness Daniel was displaying. "Understood, sir. I’ll deliver the message."

Just as Marcus walked away, the doors to the operating room swung open. Dr. Evans, the chief surgeon, walked out, pulling off her surgical mask. She looked exhausted.

Daniel rushed forward. "Doctor. Tell me."

The doctor offered a faint, reassuring smile. "It was incredibly close, Mr. Sterling. The placental abruption caused severe internal bleeding. But Sarah is a fighter. We managed to stabilize her."

"And the baby?" Daniel’s breath hitched.

"A baby boy. He’s incredibly small, weighing just under four pounds, and his lungs are underdeveloped. He’s currently in the NICU on a ventilator. The next twenty-four hours are critical, but he has his mother’s spirit."

A wave of relief washed over Daniel, so strong it nearly brought him to his knees. He nodded, unable to speak, and hurried down the hall to the recovery room.

When he entered, the room was dimly lit. Sarah looked fragile beneath the heavy hospital blankets, her left hand heavily bandaged and elevated. But as she heard his footsteps, her eyes fluttered open.

"Daniel..." she whispered, her voice incredibly weak. "Our boy... where is he?"

Daniel pulled a chair close to her bed and gently took her uninjured hand. "He’s in the NICU, Sarah. He’s beautiful. He looks just like you. He’s fighting, and so are you. You’re safe now. I promise you, she can never touch you again."

Sarah squeezed his hand, a single tear escaping her eye. But even as safety surrounded them, both knew that Vanessa’s web of deceit stretched far beyond the walls of Sterling Manor. The real war had just begun.
