Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Survival

The sirens wailed in the distance, a piercing duet that tore through the stormy afternoon sky, but inside the grand foyer of Sterling Manor, the world had shrunk to the frantic rhythm of Sarah’s heartbeat. Daniel held her against his chest, his immaculate suit ruined by the dust and blood on the marble floor, but he didn't care. His hands, usually so steady in the boardroom, were shaking as he brushed a stray lock of hair away from her sweat-slicked forehead.
"Stay with me, Sarah. Look at me," Daniel pleaded, his voice thick with an emotion he had spent months trying to suppress.
Sarah could barely nod. The agonizing pain in her crushed hand was nothing compared to the terrifying, tightening sensation in her abdomen. She gripped his lapel with her uninjured hand, her knuckles turning white. "The baby, Daniel... something’s wrong. It’s too early," she gasped, her eyes wide with a mother’s primal terror.
Across the room, the scene was pure chaos. The heavy oak doors were pushed back even further as four police officers, guns drawn, swarmed the foyer. Behind them came Daniel’s private medical team, wheeling a gurney.
Vanessa stood frozen, her mind spinning as she looked at the officers. The mask of the grieving, self-defending victim had completely shattered. "Get away from me!" she shrieked as an officer grabbed her wrists, forcing her arms behind her back. The cold click of handcuffs echoed through the hall. "Do you know who I am? I am the future matriarch of this estate! Daniel, tell them! Tell them she attacked me!"
Daniel didn't even turn around. His back remained a solid wall between Vanessa and the woman she had tried to destroy. "Take her away," he said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, gravelly whisper. "And ensure she is placed in maximum security. No bail. No phone calls."
"You can't do this!" Vanessa screamed, her golden heels scuffing the floor as she was dragged toward the police cruiser. Her perfect crimson gown was wrinkled, her hair disheveled, her true, monstrous nature laid bare for the cowering household staff to see. "I will ruin you, Daniel! I will take everything!"
As Vanessa’s screams faded into the distance, the paramedics rushed to Sarah’s side.

"Her blood pressure is skyrocketing, and she’s going into premature labor induced by trauma," the lead paramedic announced, quickly setting up an IV. "We need to move her now."
Daniel refused to let go of her hand, even as they lifted her onto the gurney. The journey to the hospital was a blur of flashing red lights and the agonizing sound of Sarah’s groans. In the back of the ambulance, Daniel watched the monitor tracking his unborn child’s heart rate. It was dipping dangerously low. He closed his eyes, a silent vow forming in his chest: if Sarah and the baby survived this night, he would burn Vanessa’s world to the ground.
