Chapter 3 - The Web of Deceit
Three weeks passed. Sarah’s physical wounds began to heal, though the psychological scars ran deep. Every sudden noise made her flinch, and she refused to sleep unless Daniel was in the room. Their son, whom they named Leo, was progressing well in the incubator, his tiny hands occasionally gripping the tubes that kept him alive.
However, outside the sanctuary of the hospital, a media storm was brewing. True to Marcus’s warning, the public relations machine of the wealthy corporate elite was working overtime.
One evening, as Sarah was feeding Leo in the NICU private room, Daniel’s phone buzzed. It was an anonymous video link. He opened it, his blood turning to ice. It was a live television interview. Vanessa, dressed in a modest, high-necked white dress, was sitting across from a notorious talk-show host. She had been released on a massive, highly controversial bail secured by her mother’s connections.
"I am the real victim here," Vanessa cried on screen, her dabbing a tissue at her perfectly dry eyes. "Sarah has always been obsessed with Daniel. She used her pregnancy to manipulate him, and when I confronted her about her financial embezzlements at the charity foundation, she attacked me. Look at my wrists—I have bruises from where her accomplices held me down!"
Sarah looked up from Leo, seeing the broadcast on Daniel’s screen. The color drained from her face. "She’s lying... how can they let her lie like that on television? The camera footage..."
"Her mother bought the network’s parent company yesterday morning," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy calm. "They are suppressing the real footage by tying it up in injunctions. They think they can win the court of public opinion before the trial even starts."
Sarah began to tremble, her maternal instincts flaring. "If she wins... if she convinces the judge... will she take Leo away? She said everything in the house belongs to her."
Daniel walked over, placing his large, warm hands on her shoulders. "Look at me, Sarah. Vanessa thinks she’s playing a game of chess, but she forgets that I own the board. She wants a public war? I will give her an apocalypse."
Daniel immediately called an emergency meeting at Sterling Enterprises. He bypasses the board of directors entirely, utilizing his majority voting shares to freeze all assets associated with Vanessa’s family.
By midnight, Daniel had leaked the unedited, raw security footage from the manor foyer not to the mainstream news networks, but to thousands of independent internet journalists and social media influencers simultaneously. He bypassed the censorship by embedding the video into the blockchain, making it impossible to delete or take down.
