Chapter 6 - The King Returns

Three weeks.
Twenty-one endless, agonizing days in a secluded chalet overlooking a snowy alpine lake in Switzerland. Marco and four loyal guards stood watch outside, but the isolation felt like a tomb. Every news report on European television spoke of a massive underworld war in Milan—a night of absolute fire and blood where the Moretti empire clashed with the Marseille cartel in a battle that reshaped the Italian mafia forever.
And then, silence.
No news. No updates. Just the haunting quiet of the mountains and the constant, crushing fear that Alessandro was never coming back.
Emma sat on the plush rug by the fireplace, brushing the mended ear of her blue rabbit. "Mommy," she asked softly, looking up with wide, innocent eyes. "Is Mr. Moretti coming home?"
I swallowed the lump in my throat, forcing a brave smile as I knelt beside her. "Yes, sweetheart. He promised."
Suddenly, the heavy oak front door of the chalet clicked open.
My heart stopped. I stood up slowly, my breath catching in my chest, my hand instinctively reaching for the edge of the wooden table.
Heavy, familiar boots stepped into the entryway.
The tall, imposing figure stepped out of the shadows of the hallway. He was wearing a dark wool overcoat, slightly scuffed at the cuffs. A white bandage was wrapped around his left forearm, and a faint, thin scar cut across his left cheekbone.
But his dark eyes were bright, fierce, and entirely alive.
Alessandro.
Emma squealed with joy, jumping up and running straight toward him. "Mr. Moretti!"
Alessandro dropped to one knee, catching Emma in his arms and lifting her high into the air with a genuine, booming laugh that I had never heard before. He buried his face in her hair for a long moment before setting her down gently.
He stood up, his dark eyes locking onto mine across the sunlit room.
The distance between us vanished in a heartbeat. I crossed the floor in a run, throwing my arms around his neck, burying my face into his broad chest as he wrapped his strong, heavy arms around me, lifting me off my feet and holding me so tightly I thought my ribs would crack.
"You came back," I sobbed quietly into his shoulder, the two years of grief, fear, and survival finally melting away completely.
"I told you," Alessandro whispered, his voice rough with emotion as he buried his face in my hair, breathing me in like oxygen. "I always keep what is mine."
He pulled back just enough to look into my eyes. With a slow, steady hand, he reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet jeweler's box, flipping it open to reveal a magnificent diamond ring that caught the alpine sunlight like fire.
"The war is over, Elena," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a deep, resonant register that commanded my entire soul. "The council is reorganized. The traitors are gone. Villa Moretti is safe. But my home... my home is wherever you and Emma are."
He looked down at Emma, who was happily holding up her blue rabbit between us, and then back to me, a tender, devastatingly sincere smile on his lips.
"Will you stay with me, Elena? Not as my housekeeper. But as my wife. As the queen of Milan?"
I looked at the powerful, feared mafia king who had risked his entire empire for a housekeeper and her daughter—a man who had found honor, loyalty, and love in the most unlikely place on earth.

I smiled through my tears, resting my hand over his heart.
"Yes, Alessandro," I whispered. "We're finally home."
