Chapter 1 - The Stitched Betrayal

The temperature in Villa Moretti’s grand hall dropped so fast that the breath of the twelve crime bosses plumed softly in the air.

Alessandro Moretti’s thumb brushed the small black emblem stitched meticulously beneath the worn velvet ear of Emma's blue rabbit. To an untrained eye, it looked like a simple monogram or a frayed patch. But to the supreme head of Milan’s underworld, it was a death sentence. It was the private insignia of the Corvo Syndicate, a splinter faction long believed to be eradicated, and specifically, the personal seal of Matteo De Luca—Alessandro’s most trusted consigliere and the man currently standing three feet to his right.

"Alessandro?" Matteo’s voice hitched, a micro-tremor betraying the smooth, unflappable demeanor he had cultivated for a decade. "Is something wrong with the child's toy?"

Alessandro stood up slowly, unfolding his towering frame with the terrifying grace of a predator sizing up its prey. His dark eyes didn't look at Matteo yet. Instead, he swept his gaze across the twelve patriarchs. Don Ricci, head of the Sicilian faction, had already placed his crystal glass down so hard the stem snapped.

"My guests," Alessandro’s voice cut through the cavernous room like a jagged razor. "It appears our gathering has been graced by an uninvited guest. Not in the flesh, but in spirit."

Vivian, still smarting from the public humiliation of his rebuke, tried to regain her footing. "Alessandro, this is absurd! You’re halting our engagement party over a dirty rag doll belonging to a housekeeper's brat? Everyone is staring—"

"Silence, Vivian," Alessandro commanded, his tone dropping to a lethal whisper that commanded immediate obedience.

He turned his gaze squarely onto Matteo.

"Matteo. You procured this estate's domestic staff through the agency in Milan’s third district. Correct?"

Matteo swallowed hard, his throat bobbing. "Yes, Boss. Standard background checks. Elena Bennett was widowed two years ago. Clean record. Desperate for work."

"Desperate," Alessandro echoed, stepping closer to his consigliere. "A brilliant cover for someone planted directly inside my fortress. Tell me, Matteo, why would a discarded, moth-eaten toy given to a three-year-old child carry the secret dispatch tag of the Corvo Syndicate? A tag used exclusively to mark safe houses and inside assets?"

The room erupted into a low, menacing rumble. The twelve families began whispering among themselves, hands resting dangerously close to hidden holsters. The illusion of impenetrable security in Villa Moretti had just shattered.

I pulled Emma tightly against my legs, shielding her small body with my trembling hands. My mind raced. A safe house tag? A spy? I had found the rabbit floating in a burlap sack near the Milan canals the winter we were freezing and starving. I had mended its torn ear with leftover thread from an old coat. It was never bought from a shop; it was trash I rescued to give my daughter comfort. How could it possibly belong to a mafia syndicate?

"Boss, you know me!" Matteo dropped to one knee, panic flashing in his eyes. "I’ve bled for you! I killed my own cousin to protect your shipping lanes in Genoa! That toy could have come from anywhere—a flea market, a dumpster! You can't accuse me based on a piece of thread!"

Alessandro didn't yell. He didn't draw a gun. He simply pulled a customized silver lighter from his vest pocket, flipped it open, and let the small blue flame dance.

"Matteo," Alessandro said softly, looking down at his lifelong friend. "You forgot one crucial detail. That symbol isn't just stitched with cotton. It's embroidered with military-grade polymer thread—the exact same thread used to reinforce the lining of our armored transport jackets. A thread exclusively imported through my private docks, distributed solely to my inner circle."

Alessandro snapped the lighter shut. The click echoed like thunder.

"Take him to the lower vault," Alessandro ordered without looking back.

Within a second, four massive bodyguards materialized from the shadows, hauling Matteo away as he began to scream, cursing my name and my daughter's name into the marble-lined corridors.

The hall remained dead silent. The twelve bosses stared at Alessandro with renewed, absolute terror. He hadn't just rooted out a traitor; he had done it under their noses, turning a minor domestic dispute into a masterclass of absolute power.

Then, Alessandro turned back to us. The terrifying, ice-cold sovereign vanished for a fraction of a second, replaced by a man who looked intensely at Emma, and then at me.

"Mrs. Bennett," Alessandro said, his voice lowering to a register meant only for us. "It appears your presence here is no longer that of a simple housekeeper. You and your daughter are now material witnesses to a high-level conspiracy within the Moretti empire. For your own safety, you are not leaving this villa."

Before I could protest, before I could demand my final paycheck and flee into the night, two guards stepped on either side of me.

Alessandro leaned down, his face inches from mine, his dark eyes burning with an unreadable intensity. "And Elena? Let us find out what else your little rabbit has to tell us."
