Chapter 3 - Blood on the Cobblestones

The sun had barely crested the horizon when the sound of shattering glass shattered the quiet morning.

I bolted upright from the guest bed, scooping Emma into my arms before she even had time to fully wake up. The bedroom door burst open, and two armed guards—the same men who had escorted us yesterday—rushed in.

"Secure the perimeter! Move, move!" barked Marco, the head of Alessandro’s personal security detail. He looked at me with grim urgency. "Mrs. Bennett, stay behind us. The west wing is under attack."

Before I could process his words, the deep, concussive boom of a car bomb echoed from the front gates of Villa Moretti. The entire mansion shook, dust and plaster raining down from the ornate ceiling.

"Matteo’s loyalists," Marco cursed under his breath, ushering us down a narrow, hidden service staircase behind the mahogany wardrobe. "They’re trying to finish what Matteo started. They know Alessandro is vulnerable with the twelve families still inside the compound."

We descended into the subterranean tunnels beneath the villa—damp, stone-walled corridors that smelled of old earth and ancient history. But even down here, we weren't safe.

Gunfire erupted ahead of us—sharp, rhythmic bursts of submachine gun fire echoing off the stone walls. Marco shoved me and Emma behind a massive stone pillar, drawing his pistol and returning fire down the dim corridor.

"Stay down!" Marco roared, blood blooming on his shoulder where a stray bullet had grazed him.

Panic threatened to swallow me whole. I wrapped my arms around Emma, burying her face into my chest so she couldn't see the muzzle flashes lighting up the dark corridor. I prayed frantically, my mind racing through every nightmare I had ever tried to escape since my husband died. I survived poverty. I survived the slums. I will not die in a mafia dungeon.

Suddenly, the gunfire stopped.

Heavy, boots slammed against the stone floor, moving toward us with terrifying speed. I braced myself, closing my eyes and shielding Emma with my own body.

"Marco!" a voice roared through the smoke—a voice that commanded the very air in the room.

"Boss!" Marco gasped, clutching his bleeding shoulder. "They breached the lower service tunnel—a coordinated strike by the remaining Corvo loyalists. They're trying to take the hostages!"

Alessandro Moretti stepped into the dim light of the corridor. He was dressed in a black tactical turtleneck, a holster strapped across his chest, and a heavy-duty assault rifle gripped in his hands. There was a smear of dark blood across his jawline—not his own.

His dark eyes scanned the corridor instantly, locking onto me and Emma cowering behind the pillar. In two strides, he was kneeling beside us.

"Are you hurt?" he demanded, his voice uncharacteristically frantic as his hands hovered over my shoulders, checking for injuries before moving to Emma.

"We’re fine," I breathed, my voice shaking uncontrollably. "Just... terrified."

Alessandro’s face hardened into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. He looked up at Marco. "Clear the remaining rats out of the catacombs. Leave no survivors."

"Understood, Boss."

Alessandro turned back to me, sliding his rifle over his shoulder. Without a single word of hesitation, he reached down, scooped Emma into one arm, and grabbed my hand with the other, pulling us up from the cold stone floor.

"Come with me," he commanded, his grip iron-tight, warm, and entirely inescapable.

He led us through a labyrinth of secret passages that opened directly into his private subterranean command center—a high-tech bunker equipped with bank-vault doors, multiple monitors displaying camera feeds of the entire estate, and rows of encrypted communication gear.

Inside, the twelve mafia bosses were huddled together, looking remarkably pale and shaken. The untouchable lords of Milan’s underworld looked like frightened schoolboys now that war had broken out on their doorstep.

As Alessandro walked in carrying my daughter, all eyes turned to him—and then to me, the lowly housekeeper holding the hand of the mafia king.

"Gentlemen," Alessandro’s voice boomed across the bunker, cold enough to freeze liquid nitrogen. "You wanted proof that the Corvo Syndicate was finished? You wanted proof that my house was compromised?"

May you like

He gently set Emma down beside me, stepping forward into the light of the central console.

"The men who just attacked us were Matteo’s inner circle, acting on orders from an unknown superior—the true head of the syndicate," Alessandro declared, his eyes sweeping across the twelve patriarchs. "And based on the encrypted transmissions we just intercepted from their dead leaders... that superior is sitting right here in this room."
