Chapter 5 - The Siege of Milan

The cleanup of Villa Moretti took three days.

In that time, the underworld of Milan underwent a seismic shift. With Emilio Barzini exposed as the traitor behind the Corvo Syndicate and Matteo neutralized in the lower vaults, the remaining eleven families fell completely into line behind Alessandro. He didn't just rule through fear anymore; he ruled through absolute, undisputed tactical supremacy.

And in the center of it all, miraculously, was me and my daughter.

Alessandro hadn't let us return to our cramped, mold-infested apartment in the third district. Instead, we were permanently moved into the master wing of the villa—a sprawling suite overlooking the manicured gardens, complete with a nursery for Emma filled with more toys than she could ever dream of, and a wardrobe of designer clothes that made me feel like an imposter in my own skin.

Yet, despite the luxury, the danger was far from over.

On the fourth night, the fragile peace shattered.

I was sitting in the private library reading a bedtime story to Emma when the heavy mahogany doors burst open. Alessandro strode in, his face grim, his tactical vest strapped back on.

"Pack a bag. Now," he commanded without preamble.

"What's happening?" I asked, standing up quickly, Emma clutching her blue rabbit in alarm.

"Barzini's loyalists in the outer factions didn't accept his capture," Alessandro said, his eyes hard as flint. "They’ve formed a coalition with a cartel out of Marseille. They’ve surrounded the entire perimeter of the estate with heavy artillery. They’re launching a full-scale assault to burn Villa Moretti to the ground and wipe out everyone inside."

My blood ran cold. "An army?"

"Yes," Alessandro said, stepping forward and taking my hand. His grip was fiercely reassuring. "My private security is holding the gates, but they outnumber us three to one. We have a reinforced armored transport waiting in the underground garage. I am getting you and Emma out of the city tonight."

"What about you?" I asked, my voice catching in my throat.

Alessandro looked down at me, a fierce, protective intensity burning in his dark eyes. "I have to stay and finish this. I have to secure the city so that no one—ever again—can threaten your safety."

"I'm not leaving you here to die!" I snapped, the long-repressed frustration and sudden, terrifying realization bubbling over into raw emotion. "You think I'm just some fragile housekeeper you can stash away in a safe house while you play hero? I survived two years of starvation and poverty alone! I can handle a war!"

Alessandro stared at me, stunned for a fraction of a second by my outburst. Then, a slow, fierce grin spread across his face—a look of absolute, profound respect.

"I know you can, Elena," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "That is precisely why I fell in love with you."

The words hung in the charged air between us like a lightning strike.

Before I could process his confession, a deafening explosion rocked the western wall of the mansion. Shards of stained glass rained down into the courtyard below. Gunfire erupted right outside the library doors.

"There's no more time," Alessandro shouted over the noise. He swept Emma up into his left arm, grabbed my hand with his right, and sprinted down the private service corridors toward the underground garage.

Smoke filled the air as we reached the armored Mercedes SUV idling in the subterranean bay. Two elite guards stood by the doors, firing assault rifles up the concrete ramp as masked mercenaries swarmed the entrance.

"Get in!" Alessandro ordered, shoving me into the back seat and handing Emma safely into my arms.

He slammed the door shut, locking it from the outside.

I rolled down the bulletproof window, panic surging through my veins. "Alessandro! What are you doing? Get in the car!"

Alessandro stood outside the driver's side door, his expression completely calm, utterly fearless, and heartbreakingly resolute. He pulled a heavy tactical rifle from the trunk, chambered a round, and looked at me one last time.

"Marco is driving you to the safehouse in the Swiss Alps," Alessandro said over the roar of gunfire. "Stay there. Wait for me."

"No! Alessandro, please!" I screamed, tears streaming down my face for the first time in two years.

He reached through the half-open window, his warm hand gripping the back of my neck, pulling my face close to his for a fierce, desperate, unforgettable kiss—tasting of smoke, gunsmoke, and raw, untamed passion.

"I always keep what is mine, Elena," he whispered against my lips. "I will come back to you."

He pulled away, slammed the window shut, and turned to face the oncoming army alone as the SUV roared to life and sped out into the burning night.
