Chapter 4 - The Rat Revealed

The bunker went so quiet you could hear the soft hum of the main computer servers against the far wall.

Don Ricci, the elderly Sicilian patriarch who had spoken up for Alessandro the night before, slowly leaned forward on his ebony cane. His old eyes narrowed.

"Moretti," Ricci rasped, his voice cutting through the tension. "You are accusing one of us of harboring the Corvo leadership? That is a grave charge. Without proof, it means war among the twelve families."

"I don't deal in accusations, Don Ricci. I deal in execution," Alessandro replied coldly. He tapped a sequence on the main console keyboard.

A massive digital screen mounted on the stone wall flickered to life. It displayed an intercepted financial ledger, decrypted in real-time by Alessandro’s cyber intelligence unit.

"For three years, millions of euros have been funneled from our shared port operations into offshore accounts in Zurich," Alessandro said, pointing to a highlighted name on the screen. "Accounts registered under a shell corporation named Viper Holdings. And the legal signature authorizing those transfers belongs to..."

He paused, letting the silence build like pressure in a boiler.

"...Don Salvatore Moretti? No. Don Emilio Barzini."

All heads snapped toward a heavy-set, impeccably dressed man standing near the back of the group. Emilio Barzini, head of the northern industrial faction, turned the color of curdled milk.

"This is a forgery!" Barzini snarled, his face twisting into a mask of panic as two of Alessandro’s armed guards instantly blocked his exit toward the vault door. "Alessandro is framing me to consolidate absolute control over the twelve families! You cannot trust him!"

"Is it a forgery, Emilio?" Alessandro asked softly, stepping closer to him. "Because my men just raided your private estate in Como an hour ago. We found your satellite phone. We found the direct audio logs of you speaking with Matteo, coordinating the exact timing of this morning's bomb attack."

Barzini’s composure completely shattered. He lunged forward, drawing a concealed silver-plated revolver from his inner jacket, aiming it straight at Alessandro's chest.

"You arrogant bastard!" Barzini screamed, his finger tightening on the trigger. "If I go down, you—"

Crack.

A single gunshot echoed through the bunker with deafening intensity.

Barzini froze. The revolver slipped from his trembling fingers, clattering loudly against the concrete floor. He staggered backward, clutching his right shoulder where a clean bullet hole had punched through his expensive suit jacket, blooming bright crimson.

I gasped, throwing my arms around Emma’s head to shield her eyes from the violence.

I looked up. Alessandro hadn't even drawn his weapon. Standing ten feet behind Barzini, smoke curling from the barrel of his silenced pistol, was a calm, unbothered bodyguard.

"Tie him up," Alessandro ordered, his voice devoid of any emotion. "Take him to the upper interrogation room. We are going to have a very long, very painful conversation about everyone else he’s been working with."

As Barzini was dragged away, screaming curses and weeping in agony, the remaining eleven bosses stood in absolute, petrified awe. They looked at Alessandro not just as an equal, but as an absolute monarch who had just crushed a rebellion before it could even draw its first breath.

Alessandro turned around. His dark eyes scanned the room, finally resting on me.

Despite the violence, despite the blood on the floor and the chaos echoing from the surface, he walked across the concrete room toward us with slow, deliberate steps.

He stopped right in front of me. The tension in his broad shoulders finally eased just a fraction.

"Are you and Emma alright?" he asked, his voice dropping into a register meant only for my ears—warm, grounding, and deeply tender.

"We're... we're alive," I whispered, my knees still shaking from the adrenaline crash. "Mr. Moretti, this place... this life... it’s insane. We need to leave. Please. Just let us go home."

Alessandro looked down at Emma, who sleepily rubbed her eyes and held up her blue rabbit.

"Mr. Bunny says you're a hero now," Emma mumbled softly, her innocent voice cutting through the grim atmosphere of the mob bunker like a ray of sunlight.

A rare, genuine smile touched Alessandro’s lips—a warm, devastatingly handsome smile that transformed his terrifying aura into something achingly human.

He gently stroked the rabbit's mended ear. "Tell Mr. Bunny that heroes don't leave their people behind," Alessandro murmured, looking back up at me.

May you like

He reached out, his warm, strong hand gently cupping my chin, tilting my face upward so my eyes met his.

"You aren't leaving Villa Moretti, Elena," Alessandro said quietly, his voice carrying an absolute, unyielding finality. "Not anymore. You and Emma belong here now. With me."
