Chapter 9 - The Trial of Evelyn Vance

The Cook County Courthouse was packed with reporters, photographers, and curious onlookers. The scandal of the wealthy socialite Evelyn Vance had captured the city’s attention.

Megan sat beside me in the front row of the courtroom, holding my hand tightly. She was wearing a simple, elegant blue dress, her face pale but determined. Our son, Leo, was still in the NICU, but he was growing stronger every day, and we were fighting for his future.

Evelyn sat at the defense table, flanked by three high-priced defense attorneys in expensive suits. She looked confident, occasionally whispering to her lawyers and smirking in our direction.

"All rise," the bailiff announced.

The trial began. For the first two days, Evelyn's defense team tried every dirty trick in the book. They cross-examined Megan, trying to paint her as a gold digger who had self-inflicted her injuries to extort money. They brought in fake character witnesses who swore Evelyn was a saint.

But on the third day, the prosecution called our witnesses.

First, the former housekeeper took the stand, weeping as she described how Evelyn had thrown her down a flight of stone stairs for dropping a crystal vase.

Then, the prosecutor played the security footage.

The courtroom was dead silent as the video played on the large screens. The hallway of our Pilsen apartment appeared. We watched Evelyn unlock our door. And then, the audio picked up Megan’s terrified, muffled screams.

"Please, Evelyn! The baby! Don't hit my belly! Please!"

The sound of a dull thud echoed through the courtroom, followed by my mother’s cold, cruel voice: "You are nothing, Megan. My son will realize what trash you are."

The footage showed Evelyn stepping out of the apartment, calmly adjusting her pearl necklace and wiping a smear of blood off her knuckles with a tissue before tossing it into the hallway trash can.

The jury gasped. Several onlookers covered their mouths in horror.

Evelyn's face drained of color. She slammed her hands on the table, standing up. "This is a fabrication! That video is fake! My son set me up!"

"Order in the court!" the judge roared, slamming his gavel. "Sit down, Mrs. Vance, or I will have you held in contempt!"

Evelyn collapsed back into her chair, her mask of elegance completely shattered. She looked like a trapped animal, realizing that her wealth, her status, and her lies could no longer save her.
