Chapter 3 - The Web of Deceit

By the time two police officers arrived at the hospital, Megan had been moved to a private, secure room in the high-risk maternity ward. She was resting, heavily medicated for the pain, but her eyes fluttered open when I walked in. I pulled a chair close to her bed, taking her hand gently.
"The police are here, Meg," I whispered, kissing her knuckles. "They need to know what happened. You don't have to be afraid anymore. She can't touch you. I won't let her near this hospital."
Megan looked at the door, her eyes wide with lingering terror, before she finally nodded. With a shaky voice, she began to unravel the horrific web of deceit my mother had spun over the last three months.
It had started shortly after we announced the pregnancy. Evelyn had never deemed Megan "good enough" for me. Megan came from a humble backgroundâher father was a retired mechanic, and her mother had passed away when she was young. Evelyn, on the other hand, prided herself on her high-society connections and wealth.
"When you were at work, Jake... she would come over," Megan whispered, tears rolling down her cheeks. "At first, she just said awful things. She told me I was a gold digger, that I was dragging you down, that our baby would grow up to be an embarrassment. But then, she started getting physical."
It had begun with "accidents"âEvelyn shoving past Megan in the narrow hallway, knocking her into the doorframe. Then, it escalated to pinches, hard grips on her wrists, and eventually, full blows.
"Why didn't you tell me, sweetheart?" I groaned, burying my face in my hands. "Why didn't you just tell me?"
"Because she showed me a folder, Jake," Megan sobbed. "She had forged bank statements and photos. She told me that if I ever said a word to you, she would use her wealth and her high-priced lawyers to frame me for embezzlement at my old job. She said she would have me thrown in prison, and when the baby was born, she would make sure I never saw him again. She said sheâd take custody of our child and raise him to hate me."
My blood ran cold. The sheer calculation of my motherâs cruelty was staggering. She had systematically isolated Megan, using her pregnancy, her physical vulnerability, and her deepest fears of losing her child to keep her silent, all while whispering poison into my ears to ensure that if Megan ever did speak up, I wouldn't believe her.
The officers, a veteran detective named Miller and his partner, recorded every word. Detective Miller looked at the photos the medical staff had taken of Megan's injuries.

"Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller said, his voice grim. "This is a severe case of aggravated battery of a pregnant victim. We will be issuing an arrest warrant for Evelyn Vance immediately. But given her financial resources, she will likely post bail quickly. We need to secure a protective order."
"Do whatever it takes," I said, my voice hardening. "Keep that monster away from my family."
