Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The transition from our comfortable, family-funded life to utter independence was brutal and instantaneous. True to my fatherâs word, my access to the family accounts was cut off by the end of the week. My company-issued car was repossessed from the hospital parking lot, and my position as the manager of the hardware store was terminated.
But I didn't care. I rented a cheap, reliable sedan with the little savings I had in my personal bank account, and I focused entirely on Megan.
After a week in the hospital, Megan was discharged. She still couldn't walk without assistance, her bruised muscles stiff and painful, but she was safe. We returned to our Pilsen apartment, which I had completely outfitted with new, heavy-duty locks and a wireless security camera system.
But my motherâs campaign of terror was far from over.
Though she was out on bail and forbidden by a restraining order from coming within 500 feet of us, Evelyn began waging a psychological war.
One evening, Megan was scrolling through her social media when she let out a sharp gasp, dropping her phone onto her lap. I rushed over from the kitchen, where I was making dinner.
"What is it, Meg?"
"Look," she whispered, her face pale.
A local community blog, heavily funded by my motherâs charitable foundation, had published an article. The headline read: âLocal Philanthropist Evelyn Vance Falsely Accused of Domestic Abuse by Vindictive Daughter-in-Law.â The article was filled with vile, fabricated details. It claimed Megan had a history of mental instability, that she had been caught trying to steal money from the family trust, and that she was using her pregnancy to extort millions of dollars from the Vance family.
The comment section was a cesspool of hatred. People we had known for years, neighbors, and strangers alike were calling Megan a "climbing gold digger" and a "psychopath."
"They're ruining me, Jake," Megan wept, her shoulders shaking. "Everyone thinks I'm a monster. How will I ever find a job? How will we raise our baby here?"
I knelt beside her, pulling her into my arms. "Let them talk, Meg. Lies don't last. The truth is going to come out in court, and when it does, she won't have a single place to hide. We just have to stay strong. For our little boy."

But the stress of the constant online harassment, the legal battles, and the fear of Evelyn's next move was taking a massive toll on Megan's body. I watched her sleep, her face etched with anxiety even in her dreams, her hand always protectively resting on her stomach.
And then, in the middle of the night, the nightmare escalated.
