Chapter 7 - The Birth of Hope

Our son was named Leo, after Megan's father. He weighed just three pounds and four ounces, his tiny body surrounded by wires and tubes inside a plastic incubator in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

For the first forty-eight hours, Megan and I barely left his side. We took turns holding our hands through the small portals of the incubator, letting Leo's tiny fingers wrap around our pinkies. He was so fragile, but every check-up showed that his heart was strong and his lungs were developing well.

But our sanctuary was shattered on the third night.

I had gone down to the hospital cafeteria to get Megan a cup of tea. When I stepped out of the elevator to return to the maternity ward, I noticed a commotion near the security desk.

"You have no right to keep me from my grandson!" a familiar, shrill voice demanded.

I froze. Standing at the security barrier, dressed in an elegant black trench coat, was Evelyn. She was waving a legal document in the face of the terrified-looking security guard.

"I have a court order granting me visitation rights as a biological grandparent!" she lied, her voice echoing through the quiet hallway. "If you do not let me through, my lawyers will sue this hospital by morning!"

A primal protective instinct flared within me. I stormed down the hallway, stepping directly between my mother and the security desk.

"Get out of here, Evelyn," I roared, not caring who heard me.

Evelyn spun around, her eyes lighting up with a sickening, triumphant glow. "Jake! Thank God. Tell these incompetent people to let me see my grandson. I have brought a film crew, Jake. We are going to show the world that I am a loving grandmother, that this entire thing has been a misunderstanding."

I looked behind her and saw a young man holding a professional video camera, hovering near the entrance. My mother wasn't here out of love. She was here to use our premature baby as a public relations stunt to salvage her reputation before her trial.

"You are a monster," I said, my voice trembling with disgust. "The judge signed a lifetime restraining order against you yesterday. If you do not leave this property in five seconds, the police will arrest you for violating a court order, and this time, there will be no bail."

Evelyn’s face contorted in a mask of pure, ugly rage. "You ungrateful little brat! I built you! I gave you everything! You think you can survive without my money? You and that cheap waitress will starve! Your baby will have nothing!"

"He will have his parents. And he will never know your name," I said.

The security guard, now fully aware of the situation, picked up the phone to call the police. Seeing that her bluff had failed, Evelyn spat on the floor, turned around, and rushed out the door, her cameraman scurrying behind her.

I leaned against the wall, my chest heaving, realizing that as long as Evelyn was free, our lives would never be safe. We needed real, undeniable proof of her crimes to put her away for good.
