Chapter 4 - The Line in the Sand

Within twenty-four hours, Evelyn Vance was arrested at her luxury suburban estate. The news of her arrest spread through our extended family like wildfire. By noon, my phone was ringing incessantly. My uncles, my cousins, and old family friends were calling, leaving frantic, demanding messages.
âJake, how could you do this to your mother?â âSheâs a pillar of the community! Youâre ruining her life over a domestic dispute!â âGet those charges dropped immediately, Jake, or you are dead to this family.â
I ignored them all. I sat in the hospital room, watching the monitor track our baby's steady heartbeat. The rhythmic thump-thump, thump-thump was the only thing keeping me sane.
On the third day, my father, Richard Vance, showed up at the hospital. He had been divorced from my mother for ten years, but he still shared her obsession with the familyâs public image. He stood in the doorway of Megan's room, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, looking at me with a mixture of disappointment and stern authority.
"Jake, we need to talk outside," he said.
I looked at Megan, who nodded reassuringly. I stepped out into the quiet hallway, closing the door firmly behind me.
"If you're here to ask me to drop the charges, save your breath, Dad," I said, crossing my arms.
Richard sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "Jake, your mother is a difficult woman. We all know she has a temper. But prison? A public trial? Do you have any idea what this is doing to the family business? The hardware store you manage is funded by the family trust. If this scandal goes public, our investors will pull out. Youâll be out of a job, and Megan won't have any medical insurance to cover this birth."
"Is that a threat?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm.
"Itâs a reality," Richard replied coldly. "Your mother has hired the best defense team in Chicago. They are going to drag Meganâs name through the mud. They will paint her as unstable, clumsy, and vindictive. They will claim she inflicted those bruises on herself to extort money from us. Drop the charges, let us handle this privately, and I will personally ensure you and Megan are taken care of financially."
I looked at the man who had raised me, realizing that the rot in my family didn't just stop with my mother. It was systemic. They cared more about their bank accounts and their social standing than the fact that a pregnant woman had been brutally beaten in their name.
"I quit," I said.
Richard blinked, stunned. "What?"
May you like
"I quit my job at the store. I renounce my share of the family trust. I want absolutely nothing to do with your money, your name, or your corrupt family," I said, stepping closer to him, my eyes locking onto his. "If you or Evelyn come near my wife or my child again, I won't just let the police handle it. I will personally dismantle everything you have ever built. Now get out of this hospital before I have security throw you out."
Richard stared at me for a long moment, realizing that the son he thought he could control was gone. He turned on his heel and walked away, his footsteps echoing down the corridor.
