Chapter 1 - The Mask Cracks

For three agonizing seconds, no one moved.

The icy air in the basement felt heavy enough to crush a man. Victoria stood frozen, her manicured hand suspended in the air where the leather crop had been a moment ago. Her eyes—usually sparkling with warmth and charm—were wide, fixed on Nathan as if she were looking at a ghost.

"Nathan..." Her voice dropped its harsh edge, desperately shifting into the soft, melodious tone she used for charity galas. "You... you were supposed to land tomorrow morning."

Nathan didn't answer. He couldn't. His gaze shifted from his wife to the three children cowering on the concrete floor.

It was Leo, his seven-year-old son, shielding five-year-old Emma. Next to them was nine-year-old Lucas, trembling violently, his eyes swollen from hours of silent weeping. These weren't the happy, vibrant kids who smiled in family portraits or ran across the manicured lawns. These were terrified captives in their own home.

Nathan took a slow, deliberate step forward. His voice was dead, stripped of all emotion. "Get away from them, Victoria."

"Nathan, darling, listen to me," she stammered, taking a step toward him, hands raised in a plea. "You don't understand. They were acting out... they ruined the foundation interview today! They need discipline. I am only doing this for their—"

"Get away from them!" Nathan roared, a thunderous sound that vibrated off the concrete walls.

Victoria flinched, taking a step back. She had never heard her husband raise his voice in twelve years of marriage.

Nathan dropped to his knees in front of the kids. Emma whimpered, pulling back instinctively, but Leo recognized his father.

"Daddy?" Leo whispered, his voice cracking. "Is it really you?"

Nathan pulled all three of them into his arms. The smell of bleach and damp cold gave way to the warmth of his tailored suit. As they clung to his neck, sobbing uncontrollably, Nathan looked up at Victoria over their small shoulders. The woman he loved was gone. In her place stood a monster.
