Chapter 9 - The Ghost of the Past

Just as Eleanor believed the storm had fully passed, a final, unexpected visitor arrived.

On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, Eleanor was working in her office when the receptionist announced that a woman named Evelyn Cross—Claire Whitmore’s former attorney—was waiting downstairs.

Eleanor hesitated, but agreed to see her.

Evelyn Cross walked into the office, carrying a small, vintage wooden box. She did not look like she was here to argue or present legal documents. She looked solemn, almost respectful.

"Eleanor," Evelyn said, setting the wooden box on the desk. "I am no longer representing Claire Whitmore. After the trial, she severed all ties with my firm. But before she left the country, she asked me to deliver this to you. She said it belonged to your father."

Eleanor looked at the box, her heart beating faster. She slowly lifted the lid.

Inside was an old, leather-bound journal. It was her father’s private diary from his university days. On the first page, in his genuine, messy handwriting, was a dedication:

“To my daughter, Eleanor. May you always have the courage to see the truth, even when the world is in darkness.”

Inside the journal were no codes, no offshore bank account details, and no illegal transactions. It was filled with sketches, poetry, and letters he had written to her when she was a baby. It was the proof Eleanor had been searching for—proof that the father she loved was real, and that his love for her had never been a lie.

"Thank you, Evelyn," Eleanor whispered, her eyes filling with tears of relief.

"You won, Eleanor," Evelyn said gently. "You saved your family's name by being honest. That's a rare thing in this city."

As Evelyn left, Eleanor clutched the journal to her chest. The final shadow of doubt had been lifted. She was no longer running from her father’s past; she was carrying his love into her future.
