Chapter 4 - The Threat in the Garden

The gardens of the Vale estate were quiet, the afternoon sun casting long, golden shadows across the stone paths. Eleanor sat on a wrought-iron bench, her laptop open on her knees, reviewing the foundation’s balance sheets from five years ago.

The numbers didn't add up. There were millions of dollars marked as "administrative expenses" that simply vanished into offshore accounts.

"You're looking in the wrong place, Eleanor."

Eleanor jumped. She looked up to see Arthur Bell walking down the stone path, his hands slipped casually into his pockets. He looked relaxed, almost friendly, but Eleanor had learned to recognize the cold calculations behind his pleasant exterior.

"Arthur," Eleanor said, closing her laptop slightly. "What are you doing here? I thought you were in board meetings all day."

"I was," Arthur said, sitting on the opposite end of the bench. "But I wanted to speak with you privately. As a friend of your father’s. As someone who cares about your future."

"My future is fine, Arthur," Eleanor said. "I am trying to fix the present. My mother is refusing to speak to the lawyers, and Claire is threatening a massive civil suit."

"Claire will drop the suit, Eleanor," Arthur said smoothly. "Under one condition."

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed. "What condition?"

"You sign a permanent non-disclosure agreement regarding all past financial transactions of the Vale Foundation, and you halt the independent audit," Arthur said. "In exchange, Claire will accept a private, undisclosed settlement from your mother’s personal assets, and she will publicly state that the entire incident at the auction was an unfortunate misunderstanding caused by a faulty security system."

Eleanor let out a cold, incredulous laugh. "A misunderstanding? Arthur, we all saw the video. She planted the bracelet. If I cover that up, I am committing fraud."

"And if you don't?" Arthur’s voice lost its warmth, turning hard and dry. "If you push for this audit, Eleanor, you will find things you wish you hadn't. Your father was not the man you loved. He was a criminal. And he left your name on the very documents that prove his guilt. If the authorities investigate the South American accounts, your signature is on the transfer slips. You will be indicted alongside your mother."

Eleanor felt the breath leave her body. Her hand went to her collarbone, her fingers trembling. "My signature? I never signed anything from those accounts."

May you like

"You did, on your eighteenth birthday, as part of your trust fund paperwork," Arthur said, standing up and looking down at her. "You didn't read the fine print, Eleanor. Your parents made sure of that. So, I suggest you take the deal. Save your name. Save your freedom. Stop looking for a truth that will only destroy you."

He walked away, leaving Eleanor alone in the darkening garden, the laptop on her knees feeling like a ticking bomb.
