Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

The following evening, the library of the Vale estate was prepared for a private meeting.
Eleanor sat at the heavy oak desk, her laptop open, her expression cool and unreadable. Beside her stood Daniel Mercer, acting as her personal advisor.
The door opened, and Arthur Bell walked in, followed by Claire Whitmore and a very subdued Beatrice Vale. Beatrice looked pale, her usual pride replaced by a hollow, nervous energy.
"Ah, Eleanor," Arthur Bell said, smiling as he took a seat in one of the leather armchairs. "I’m glad you came to your senses. Claire has the non-disclosure agreement ready for your signature. Once this is signed, we can put this entire unfortunate chapter behind us."
Claire set a leather-bound document on the desk, sliding it toward Eleanor. "Sign it, Eleanor. Let's end this childish crusade."
Eleanor did not look at the document. She looked at Arthur Bell.
"I have a few questions before I sign, Arthur," Eleanor said. "About the South American accounts."
Arthur’s smile didn't waver. "As I told you, those accounts are a family matter. Signing this agreement protects you from any legal exposure regarding those signatures."
"But I don't need protection, Arthur," Eleanor said, turning her laptop screen around to face him.
On the screen, a high-definition video feed of a local police station appeared. An officer was sitting at a desk, holding a printed document.
"What is this?" Arthur asked, his brow furrowing.
"This is Detective Miller of the White-Collar Crime Division," Eleanor said. "And he is currently reviewing the forensic report on the autopen signatures used to forge my name on those offshore accounts. He is also reviewing the financial records of your private consulting firm, which bought the digital signature software three years ago."
Arthur Bell’s face instantly drained of color. He rose from his seat, his hands gripping the edge of the desk. "You're bluffing. You wouldn't risk your father’s reputation."
"My father was a victim of your manipulation, Arthur," Eleanor said, her voice rising in power. "You convinced him to make those bad investments, and then you used his death to cover up your own embezzlement. You didn't just steal from the foundation; you stole from our family for over a decade."
Beatrice gasped, looking at Arthur in shock. "Arthur... is this true? You told me my husband was the one who lost the money!"
"Shut up, Beatrice!" Arthur snapped, his polished facade completely cracking. He turned back to Eleanor, his eyes wild. "You think you've won? Even if the signatures are forged, the money is gone! The foundation is bankrupt! If you expose me, you expose the ruin of the Vale family!"

"The money isn't gone, Arthur," Daniel Mercer said, stepping forward. "We tracked the transfers. The funds weren't lost in bad investments. They were transferred to a private account in Switzerland under your name. The Swiss authorities have already frozen the account based on the forensic report we submitted this morning."
Arthur collapsed back into his chair, his hands trembling violently. He realized, with absolute certainty, that there was no way out of the trap Eleanor and Daniel had laid for him.
