Chapter 3 - The Alliance in the Shadows

By noon the following day, the media storm had arrived.

Tabloids and financial journals alike were running the story of the "Sapphire Scandal." A video clip of the security footage—leaked by an anonymous guest—had already garnered millions of views on social media. The public was outraged, demanding the immediate removal of Beatrice Vale from all charitable boards.

In a quiet, wood-paneled office in downtown Manhattan, Claire Whitmore sat opposite her attorney, a sharp-eyed woman named Evelyn Cross.

The door opened, and Arthur Bell walked in. He did not wear his usual public-relations smile. He looked tired, his silver hair slightly disheveled.

"Arthur," Claire said, gesturing to the leather chair opposite her. "I'm glad you came. I assume you’ve seen the morning papers?"

"It’s a disaster, Claire," Arthur said, sighing as he sat down. "The board is in panic. Shareholders are threatening to pull out of the upcoming real estate development if Beatrice remains associated with the brand. But we have a bigger problem. Eleanor is refusing to back down. She’s calling for an independent audit of the foundation’s books."

Claire’s eyes narrowed. "An audit? If she audits the books, she will find the South American transactions. She will realize her father was laundering money through our late husbands' joint shell companies."

"Exactly," Arthur said. He leaned forward, his voice dropping. "And if she finds that, she won't just ruin Beatrice. She’ll ruin my reputation as well. I signed off on those audits, Claire. I was your husband's primary financial advisor. If the truth comes out, I am facing federal prison."

Evelyn Cross, Claire’s attorney, tapped her gold pen against her notepad. "Then we must ensure the audit never happens. We need to offer Eleanor a deal. We pressure Beatrice to step down quietly, hand over the executive control of the estate to Eleanor, and in exchange, Eleanor signs a non-disclosure agreement regarding the foundation's historical finances."

"And if she refuses?" Claire asked. "Eleanor is stubborn. She inherits her father's sense of duty."

"Then we make her look complicit," Arthur Bell said coldly. "We release the offshore bank accounts that bear Eleanor’s signature. She was listed as a co-signer on the South American accounts when she turned eighteen. She didn't know about them, of course, but the public won't care about that distinction. A twenty-one-second video of Beatrice planting a bracelet won't look so bad compared to Eleanor stealing millions from a children's charity."

Claire looked at Arthur, a slow, calculated smile spreading across her face. "A beautiful trap, Arthur. Let's see how much Eleanor values her integrity when her own freedom is on the line."
