Chapter 6 - The Trial of the Century

Six months later, the courtroom was packed to the brim.
I stood at the prosecutor’s podium, fully recovered. The physical scars on my back were hidden beneath a sharp, tailored blazer, but the emotional scars had transformed into an armor of pure steel. I had petitioned the court to act as co-counsel for the state—a rare move, but given my legal background, the judge had allowed it.
Daniel sat at the defense table, looking disheveled and aged. His expensive suits no longer fit, and the smug arrogance had been replaced by a look of sheer desperation. Next to him sat Vivian, heavily medicated and staring blankly at the floor.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," I began, my voice echoing with absolute authority through the courtroom. "This is not a simple case of domestic discord. This is a story of a calculated, years-long conspiracy to manipulate, abuse, and ultimately eliminate a human being for financial gain."
For three days, I presented the evidence.
I played the kitchen recording. The jury gasped, some even covering their mouths in horror as the sound of my screams filled the room.
I presented the financial audits, showing exactly how Daniel had systematically funneled millions of dollars into offshore accounts, thinking he was stealing from me, only to walk directly into the financial trap my father and I had set years prior.
When Daniel took the stand in his own defense, he tried one last time to play the victim.
"I loved her," he sobbed, squeezing out fake tears. "I was under so much stress. My mother... my mother has dementia. She didn't know what she was doing, and I was just trying to protect my family. Clara has always been vindictive. She set us up!"
I stepped up to the podium for cross-examination.
"Mr. Vance," I said, holding up a document. "You claim your mother has dementia. Yet, three days before the attack, you signed a document transferring 100% of her shell corporation's assets directly into your personal bank account. If she was mentally incompetent, why were you using her to launder stolen funds?"
Daniel opened his mouth, but no words came out. He looked at his lawyer, who simply put his head in his hands.

"And finally," I said, projecting my voice so every reporter in the gallery could hear. "If you loved me, why did you search 'how to dissolve a body in acid' on your work computer just twelve hours before your mother threw that boiling oil?"
The courtroom erupted into whispers. Daniel collapsed back into his seat, completely broken.
