Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

The news of the arrest spread like wildfire. By the next morning, local news outlets were broadcasting Daniel’s mugshot. For years, he had built a reputation as a rising star in real estate, a devoted husband, and a pillar of the community. Now, the world was seeing him for what he truly was: a monster.
In my hospital room, Lena adjusted my IV, her face etched with worry. "The burns are severe, Clara. You’re going to need skin grafts, and the recovery will be long. But the police have the video. They aren't getting out on cheap bail."
"They will try," I croaked, my throat raw. "Daniel has connections. And he still thinks he has my money."
Just as I spoke, my phone buzzed. It was an email from Daniel's high-priced defense attorney, Richard Sterling—a man I had personally humiliated in court five years ago.
“Clara,” the email read. “Let’s not ruin lives over a domestic dispute. If you drop the charges and sign over the remaining assets of the Vance estate, we can settle this quietly. Otherwise, we will release medical records detailing your history of 'emotional instability' to the press.”
I stared at the screen, a cold anger replacing the burning pain in my back. They were still trying to gaslight me. They still thought they held the cards because of the fake documents I had signed six months ago.
I called my personal attorney and lifelong friend, Marcus.
"Marcus," I said, my voice steady despite the pain. "It’s time to unlock the vault. Release the financial audit of Vance Development to the forensic accountants at the District Attorney's office. And Marcus? Call a press conference for tomorrow morning."

"Are you sure you're ready for this, Clara?" Marcus asked gently. "You're still in the burn unit."
"I’ve spent three years hiding in the shadows of their cruelty," I replied. "It’s time they realize who they actually let into their home."
