Chapter 5 - A Final Face-Off

I didn't panic. I reached under my pillow and pressed the emergency alert button Lena had given me, while simultaneously starting a voice recording on my phone.

"You shouldn't be here, Vivian," I said, keeping my voice remarkably calm. "It's a violation of your bail conditions."

"Bail doesn't matter anymore!" she snarled, reaching into her pocket. She pulled out a small syringe filled with a clear liquid. "Daniel is going to jail because of you. But I’m going to make sure you don't live to testify against him. They'll think you had a sudden, tragic reaction to your pain medication."

"Is that what Daniel told you to do?" I asked, stretching for time. "Just like he told you to throw the oil? He’s using you, Vivian. He always has. He let you take the fall for the assault while he tried to play the grieving husband."

"He loves me!" she screamed, stepping closer, raising the syringe. "He is my son! You were nothing but a paycheck!"

"A paycheck you never got," I retorted. "The money is gone, Vivian. Every cent of the Vance family fortune is locked away in my father’s trust. Even if I die, it goes to charity. You killed your own future for absolutely nothing."

Vivian froze, her face twisting in shock and realization.

At that exact moment, the door burst open. Two hospital security guards and Detective Miller rushed in, tackling Vivian to the ground before she could plunge the needle into my IV line.

As they dragged her out screaming, Detective Miller picked up the syringe from the floor.

"Well," Miller said, looking at me with immense respect. "I think she just upgraded her charges to attempted murder of a witness. And we got it all on your hospital room's security feed."
