Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Within the Ranks

With the federal government stepping in, Daniel’s world began to crumble. His assets were frozen, his clients began pulling out of deals, and his prestigious firm fired him via a public press release.
But a cornered animal is always the most dangerous.
Two days later, Vivian was released on a massive bail, funded by a mysterious benefactor. I knew Daniel didn't have that kind of cash left, which meant someone else was pulling the strings.
Lena rushed into my room, looking pale. "Clara, we have a problem. The hospital's security just reported that someone tried to access your medical charts under a false name. And that’s not all. The kitchen camera footage? The local police department is saying the original file on their server has been corrupted."
My heart skipped a beat. Daniel still had friends in high places. He had bribed someone within the local precinct to delete the primary evidence of the attack.
"They think they’re clever," I muttered, gritting my teeth as I sat up, the movement sending a sharp sting across my bandaged back. "But they forgot who built that security system."
I opened my laptop and logged into a secondary, encrypted offshore server that Daniel never knew existed. The footage wasn't just safe; it had already been copied and sent to three different national news networks, scheduled to air on the evening news if I didn't enter a daily deactivation code.
Just then, my door swung open.
It wasn't a doctor. It was Vivian.

She had bypassed the nurses' station, dressed in a long coat, her eyes bloodshot and crazed.
"You miserable little snake," Vivian hissed, stepping toward my bed. "You think you've won? You ruined my son’s life! You will pay for this!"
