Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Protection

The tension in the foyer was stretched so thin it felt as though a single breath would set off a bloodbath. The two uniformed officers looked at each other nervously, realizing they were drastically outgunned by the six armed Vale guards quietly slipping out from the side hallways.

"You're making a mistake, Romano," Miller spat, taking a cautious step back. "She's a criminal."

"She is the head of pediatric care for my son," Alessio corrected coldly. "And her legal record was completely expunged twenty minutes ago by the State Attorney’s office—a personal favor owed to my legal team. Check your phone, Detective."

Miller’s phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out with trembling fingers, scanning an urgent text message from his precinct commander. His eyes widened in absolute horror. The warrant was dismissed, his own internal affairs file was officially reopened, and an arrest team was currently waiting for him back at his precinct.

"You... you set me up," Miller stammered, backing toward the front entrance.

"You set yourself up the moment you harmed a child," Alessio said softly. "Now get out of my sight before I decide to save the state the cost of a trial."

Miller didn't hesitate. He turned and sprinted out the grand double doors, his two uniformed officers right on his heels. The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them with a definitive thud.

The silence returned to the mansion.

Alessio stood at the bottom of the stairs, taking a deep breath to settle the dark adrenaline coursing through his veins. He turned around and looked up at the balcony.

Fiona was still standing there, holding Leo. Tears were running down her cheeks, but for the first time in two years, her posture wasn't weighed down by fear. She looked at Alessio not as a terrifying mob boss, but as the man who had ripped away the chains of her past in a single morning.

Alessio walked slowly up the stairs until he stood in front of her.

"He won't ever bother you again," Alessio said quietly, his voice unusually soft. "None of them will."

Fiona looked up into his dark, intense eyes. "Why did you do that? You didn't owe me anything. I lied to you about who I was."

"You lied to survive," Alessio said, reaching out with a gentle, cautious finger to touch Leo’s tiny hand. "And last night, you saved my entire world. In my life, loyalty like that isn't bought with a paycheck. It’s repaid with blood and protection."

Fiona offered a faint, breathless smile. "Thank you, Alessio."

Hearing his first name on her lips sent a sudden, unexpected warmth through Alessio's chest—a feeling he hadn't experienced since the day his wife died. He looked at her wet eyes, her soft lips, and the fierce grace she carried, realizing that she was no longer just his son's nanny.

She was becoming the light in a house that had been dark for far too long.
