Chapter 2 - Unearthing the Past

By 6:00 a.m., the storm had passed, leaving behind a pale, gray morning. Alessio sat in his private study on the ground floor, staring at a thick manila folder that had just been delivered by a trusted private investigator.
Across the desk sat Dominic, looking exhausted.
"We checked the security footage," Dominic reported, leaning against the leather chair. "At 11:30 p.m. last night, while Fiona was in the kitchen getting warm milk, someone entered the nursery for precisely forty-two seconds. The camera in the hallway was glitched out for those forty-two seconds."
"An insider," Alessio said softly, his knuckles turning white as he clenched his hands.
"Looks like it," Dominic agreed. "And what about the girl?"
Alessio opened the folder. The top document was a revoked medical license bearing a seal from the State of Illinois. Beneath it was a photograph of Fiona Bennett wearing hospital scrubs, looking radiant and smiling alongside medical staff.
"Her real name is Fiona Bennett," Alessio read aloud, his eyes scanning the court records. "Former head of pediatric trauma at Chicago General. Two years ago, her ex-fiancé—a dirty narcotics detective named Detective Frank Miller—pinned a massive theft of seized opioids on her when Internal Affairs caught him."
Dominic grunted. "So she’s an ex-con?"
"She took a plea deal to avoid prison," Alessio corrected, reading the transcript carefully. "Stripped of her license, ruined financially, forced to take off-the-books domestic work to survive."
Alessio closed the folder and leaned back in his chair, a strange sensation stirring in his chest. She wasn't an assassin. She wasn't a spy sent by his enemies. She was a survivor—a woman who had been destroyed by a corrupt man in power, yet still possessed a heart capable of risking her life to save a motherless baby.
"What do we do with her, boss?" Dominic asked. "She lied on her application."
"She protected my child when I was three seconds away from killing her," Alessio said, his voice dropping into an absolute tone that admitted no argument. "Her past stays between us. As of today, her salary is tripled. And I want Detective Frank Miller investigated. Every deal he has, every bribe he takes, every breath he draws."
Dominic smiled faintly, recognizing the dark promise in his boss's voice. "Consider it done."
Suddenly, the intercom on the desk buzzed. It was Marcus, the head of estate security.
"Boss, we have a situation at the main gate. A Chicago Police cruiser just pulled up. It’s Detective Miller. He says he has an anonymous tip that a fugitive with an active warrant is hiding on the property."

Alessio’s eyes flared with a lethal, icy wrath. He stood up slowly, buttoning his tailored jacket.
"Let him in," Alessio commanded. "And tell Fiona to bring Leo to my study."
