Chapter 3 - The Wolves at the Door

Detective Frank Miller walked into the grand foyer of the Romano estate as if he owned the place. He was a broad, heavy-set man in his late thirties, wearing a rumpled leather coat. His eyes were small, arrogant, and greedy. Two uniformed officers stood behind him, looking thoroughly uncomfortable to be inside the stronghold of Chicago's most dangerous syndicate leader.
"Mr. Romano," Miller said, offering a sleazy smile. "Sorry to disturb your morning. But duty calls."
Alessio stood at the foot of the sweeping marble staircase, his posture relaxed, his hands casually shoved into his trousers pockets. Dominic stood behind him like an immovable wall of brick and muscle.
"You're far outside your jurisdiction, Detective," Alessio said calmly. "Lake Forest isn't Chicago."
"I follow leads wherever they go," Miller replied, pulling a piece of paper from his coat. "Got an anonymous call an hour ago. Seems you've got an unlicensed medical worker operating under a false identity in your home. Fiona Bennett. She breached her probation terms by failing to report a change of address."
From the top of the stairs, a soft footstep sounded.
Fiona stood near the railing, holding baby Leo wrapped in a warm blanket. When her eyes fell on Miller, her entire body went rigid. The color drained from her face, old trauma and fear washing over her like a tidal wave.
Miller looked up, his grin widening into a predatory sneer. "There she is. Hey, Fiona. Long time no see. Put the kid down and wrap your hands behind your back."
Fiona’s grip on the baby tightened. "Frank... what are you doing here?"
"Doing my job, sweetie," Miller smirked, taking a step toward the stairs. "You skipped town on your probation officer. That means you're going to prison this time."
Before Miller’s foot could touch the first marble step, Alessio stepped directly into his path.
The air in the foyer instantly plummeted into a terrifying, suffocating chill.
"Take one more step toward those stairs," Alessio said, his voice dropping into a register that made the two uniformed officers behind Miller reach instinctively for their holsters, "and you will not leave this house alive."
Miller stopped, his smirk flickering for a second before his arrogance recovered. "Are you threatening a police officer, Romano? I have a warrant."
"You have a piece of paper signed by a corrupt magistrate you pay off in the Third District," Alessio countered, stepping closer until he was looking down into Miller's eyes. "I know who you are, Detective. I know about your offshore accounts in Grand Cayman. I know about the narcotics you stole from the evidence locker two years ago—the same ones you blamed on the innocent woman standing behind me."
Miller’s eyes widened in genuine shock. "You don't know what you're talking about—"
"I know everything," Alessio interrupted smoothly. "And more importantly, you entered my home under the pretense of an anonymous tip. But we both know the truth, don't we? You were the one who hired my disgruntled former housekeeper to cut the pacifier string last night."
Fiona gasped from the balcony above.
May you like
Miller went pale, his jaw tightening. "You can't prove that!"
"I don't need a court of law to prove anything, Detective," Alessio whispered, leaning in close so only Miller could hear. "This is my kingdom. And you just threatened the two most important people in it."
