Chapter 1 - The Midnight Interrogation

The rain continued to hammer against the windowpanes of the Lake Forest mansion, but inside the nursery, the silence was suffocating. Leo’s furious wails had softened into rhythmic, exhausted hiccups as he fell asleep against Fiona’s chest.

Alessio remained on his knees, his broad shoulders rising and falling. His hands, usually so steady when holding a weapon, were visibly shaking as he gently brushed his thumb across his son’s cheek. The baby’s color was completely back to a healthy pink.

Slowly, Alessio stood up. He picked up his Glock from the changing table, engaged the safety, and holstered it. His demeanor shifted instantly—the wild, terrified father vanished, replaced by the calculating syndicate boss.

"How did a pacifier bead break?" Alessio asked, his voice low, gravelly, and laced with dangerous suspicion. He picked up the tiny piece of plastic with two fingers, examining the jagged edge. "These are custom-made, solid wood and safe-grade acrylic. They don't just snap."

Fiona wiped the remaining tears from her face, rising carefully so as not to wake the infant. She laid Leo in his crib, her hands lingering on his back for a moment.

"Someone cut the cord," Fiona said quietly, turning to face him. Her voice was steady, but her eyes held a cold, sharp intensity. "Look at the edge of the string left on the clip. It wasn't frayed by wear. It was sliced with a razor."

Alessio’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "Are you telling me someone attempted to murder my son?"

"I’m telling you someone left a choking hazard directly in his crib," Fiona replied, taking a step toward him. "And whoever did it knew exactly how infants put everything in their mouths."

Alessio stared at her. His mind raced through the house's security protocols. Only five people had access to the nursery: himself, Fiona, his underboss Dominic, the housekeeper Rosa, and the head of estate security, Marcus.

"You knew exactly what to do," Alessio said, his gaze dropping to her hands. "You didn't panic. You used back blows, chest thrusts, and forced extraction. That isn't basic CPR training from a nanny agency, Fiona."

Fiona froze. The secret she had kept buried for two years was suddenly teetering on the edge of exposure.

"I took a course," she lied smoothly, trying to keep her posture neutral.

"Don't lie to me," Alessio snapped, stepping into her personal space. His shadow engulfed her. "I watched a woman perform an emergency airway clearance under the barrel of a loaded gun without missing a beat. You held a surgical instrument inside a three-month-old's throat. Who are you?"

Before Fiona could answer, heavy footsteps hurried down the hallway. Dominic, Alessio’s massive underboss, burst into the nursery with his weapon drawn, his eyes wild.

"Boss! I heard the gun cocking on the internal comms! Is everything—"

"Lock down the estate," Alessio interrupted without looking away from Fiona. "Nobody leaves. Nobody enters. Review every camera feed from the last twelve hours. I want to know every person who stepped foot within ten feet of this room."

"Right away, boss," Dominic said, casting a strange, wary glance at Fiona before retreating.

Alessio turned back to Fiona, his dark eyes penetrating. "You saved my son's life tonight. For that, you have my eternal protection. But if I find out you brought this danger into my house... God help you."
