Chapter 5 - The Ashes of the Vales

The federal agents escorted a sobbing Adrian out of the suite. Celeste rushed after them, desperately shrieking into her phone as she tried to reach the family's high-priced defense attorneys—lawyers whose retainers, as she would discover within the hour, had been completely frozen along with the rest of the family's bank accounts.

The hospital room finally fell dead silent.

The chaotic storm had passed, leaving behind only the gentle, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor and the peaceful breathing of my newborn son. I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down into the courtyard below. I watched as three dark sedan cruisers pulled out of the hospital gates, their red and blue emergency lights flashing silently against the midday sun.

By 2:00 p.m., the financial news networks broke the story nationwide. The Vale dynasty, long considered untouchable leaders in medical technology, had collapsed in a single afternoon. The high-society wedding of the year was canceled, Vale Biomedical stock crashed to historic lows on Wall Street, and the remaining board members appointed an emergency receiver to oversee the transfer of the company's core technological assets to a newly established entity: Vance Biotech Trust.

My phone chimed softly on the nightstand. It was a text from my lead legal counsel:

All primary patent rights secured. Full sole legal custody papers filed and signed by the judge. The court has issued an immediate temporary restraining order against the entire Vale family. You and the baby are completely protected.

I smiled, laying the phone face-down.
