Chapter 3 - The True Investment

Celeste clutched her three-strand pearl necklace, her face flushed red with unbridled, ugly rage. "You ruined us! You deliberately orchestrated the public destruction of our name! We gave you a home, a elevated social position, a prestigious title—"
"You gave me nothing I didn't earn a hundred times over," I fired back, my voice turning to absolute ice as I sat upright. "When Adrian was sleeping off hangovers in five-star hotels, I was pulling forty-hour shifts in the laboratory writing our core patent applications. When our clinical trials hit regulatory roadblocks, I was the one who fixed the delivery formulas. You called our marriage a 'bad investment,' Adrian. But you forgot who actually owned the intellectual capital."
Adrian took a shaky, desperate step closer to the bassinet. He stared down at the newborn, his hands trembling so violently he had to shove them into his pockets. The child stirred slightly in his sleep, letting out a soft sigh and revealing the distinct cleft chin that had marked four generations of Vale men.
"He's a Vale," Adrian choked out, a sudden, pathetic glimmer of hope flashing in his tear-filled eyes. "He's my blood, Maya. My legacy. Let me touch him. We can fix this... we can restructure the corporate holdings... we can arrange a private custody agreement. I'll make everything right, I swear to God I will."

"He is a Vale by blood, yes," I said calmly, standing up slowly from the edge of the bed and stepping directly into his line of sight, physically blocking him from the child. "But legally, his last name is Vance. My maiden name. And as for custody? A man currently facing federal indictments for grand larceny, securities manipulation, and corporate embezzlement isn't getting unsupervised visitation with a infant."
"Maya, please," Adrian begged, the arrogant billionaire reduced to a weeping, wrinkled mess in front of his mother and mistress. "Don't do this to me. Don't take my son and my life away in one afternoon."
