Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

Before Adrian could reach out to touch my arm, the heavy wooden door of the private suite swung open again. This time, it wasn't a nurse or a pediatrician. Two tall men in tailored dark suits holding opened leather badge wallets stepped decisively into the room.

"Adrian Vale?" the lead federal agent asked, his voice booming with authority.

Celeste gasped, stepping back against the wall. "How dare you interrupt us! Do you have any idea who we are?"

"We know precisely who you are, Mrs. Vale," the agent replied coldly, ignoring her completely as he turned his focus back to Adrian. "Mr. Vale, you are under arrest pursuant to a federal warrant for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, securities manipulation, and illegal transfer of corporate assets. You have the right to remain silent."

"No! No, this is a massive misunderstanding!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away toward the bathroom as if physical distance could shield her from the law. "I had nothing to do with any of this! It was all his idea! My family was lied to!"

Adrian snapped his head toward Vanessa, a bitter, broken laugh escaping his lips. "Lied to? Your father personally helped set up the shell corporations in Panama, Vanessa! You picked out the multi-million dollar estate in the south of France that we bought with stolen grant money!"

"I didn't know!" she yelled back, her designer veil slipping untidily from her hair as she darted out into the hallway, desperate to flee the sinking ship.

As the officers clicked heavy metal handcuffs around Adrian's wrists, he didn't look at his fleeing fiancée, nor did he look at his mother, who was currently screaming legal threats at the second agent. He kept his hollow, terrified eyes locked entirely on me.

"You knew all along," he whispered, his voice cracking with absolute defeat. "From the very day you packed your bags and left."

"I knew," I said simply, meeting his gaze without a shred of pity. "You traded a loyal partner and a real family for short-term profit and cheap applause. Enjoy the yield on your investment, Adrian."
