Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Dynasty

The silence that settled over the hospital room was suffocating, heavy enough to crush the lungs. Outside the heavy door, the muffled, cheerful hum of the maternity ward's hallway felt light-years away from the war zone contained within these four walls.

"You set a trap," Adrian said, his voice dropping to a low, unstable register. His expensive tuxedo jacket hung awkwardly on his shoulders now, his elite poise completely obliterated. "You let me sign those divorce papers. You let me walk away so I would think I was completely safe."

"I didn't trap you, Adrian. You trapped yourself in your own boundless greed," I said, meeting his silver-gray eyes—the exact same eyes as the helpless child resting against my side. "You thought I was weak because I chose not to scream when you brought Vanessa into our home. You mistook my quiet dignity for absolute submission. But while you were busy planning a million-dollar wedding with stolen funds, I was quietly, methodically undoing every single illegal maneuver you ever executed."

Vanessa grabbed Adrian’s arm, her claws digging through his sleeve as her voice rose to an ugly shriek. "Adrian, do something! My father's capital firm is directly tied to those Panama accounts! If those funds are frozen, our international merger dies today! Our wedding guests are already seated at the cathedral!"

"There isn't going to be a merger, Vanessa," I pointed out, pulling a second, single sheet of official stationary from the folder. "And there certainly isn't going to be a wedding. Your father was taken into federal custody for questioning twenty minutes ago at the airport. He was attempting to board a private flight to Zurich."

Vanessa gasped, her grip slipping as her phone dropped flat onto the floor. The screen shattered into a web of spiderweb cracks, but the breaking news alert flashing across the glass remained glaringly readable: Vale-Hastings Biotech Merger Collapses Amid Federal Fraud and Money Laundering Investigation.
