Chapter 1 - The Paperwork of Reckoning

Adrian’s eyes darted frantically between my unreadable face and the flashing screen of his fiancée's phone. "You... you couldn't have. Those accounts were fully encrypted using high-level banking protocols. My corporate lawyers personally assured me—"
"Your lawyers used the encryption framework I built into the company's network infrastructure three years ago," I interrupted calmly. "Did you really think I spent five years as Chief Technology Officer at Vale Biomedical just organizing your calendar and smiling for photo ops, Adrian? I wrote the core security algorithms for our clinical data and financial transfers. When you transferred twenty-four million dollars in stolen federal research grants into Panama last November, my automated forensic tracking protocol logged every single transaction—complete with your verified digital signature, time stamp, and IP address."
Celeste stepped forward, her expensive heels clicking aggressively against the linoleum floor. Her massive diamond rings caught the harsh fluorescent lights, casting jagged reflections across the walls. "You spiteful, bitter little girl!" she snarled, dropping her aristocratic facade. "You think a few administrative technicalities and financial delays will ruin my family? Adrian is the visionary face of Vale Biomedical! The board will clear this up in twenty-four hours!"
"The board won't be doing anything, Celeste," I replied, reaching over to pull a heavy blue leather binder from my bedside table and tossing it onto the foot of my bed. "Because as of eight o'clock this morning, the board no longer has a legal quorum. Three major institutional investors resigned after receiving independent forensic audit reports regarding asset stripping. And the remaining sixty percent of non-voting preferred shares? They were transferred to a blind trust account established at dawn."

Adrian stared at the heavy binder as if it were a venomous snake about to strike. "A trust account for whom?"
"For your son," I said softly, looking down at the baby sleeping peacefully beside me. "The sole heir to the original patent portfolio of Vale Biomedical—patents that were filed in my maiden name years before I was stupid enough to marry you."
