Chapter 4 - Choosing the Crown or the Heart

For the next forty-eight hours, Chicago became a corporate warzone.

Victor Vance executed a hostile takeover of Harrison Global, leaking false stories to the press that Nathan Harrison had suffered a mental breakdown and was abandoning a multi-billion-dollar global deal for an unverified family claim.

The stock price of Harrison Global plummeted. Reporters swarmed Nathan’s penthouse, his office, and Emma’s apartment building.

Inside a secure safehouse outside the city, Nathan sat at a table covered in financial ledgers, legal documents, and corporate filings. Beside him sat Emma, serving hot tea. The twin boys were asleep on the couch nearby, wrapped in warm blankets.

"The board meeting is tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM," Emma said softly, sitting across from him. "If you sign the Singapore deal and disavow us publicly, you keep your empire, Nathan. You stay the King of Concrete."

Nathan looked at the legal papers sitting in front of him. The signature line for the three-billion-dollar contract was blank.

Then he turned his head and looked at the sleeping boys. He remembered Noah holding his notebook of rockets. He remembered Ethan offering to forgo bread so his mother wouldn't suffer. He looked at Emma—the woman who had sacrificed her youth, her health, and her pride to raise two incredible boys completely alone.

Nathan took the multi-billion-dollar Singapore contract, held it in his hands, and ripped it straight down the middle.

Emma gasped. "Nathan! What are you doing?!"

"I spent ten years building towers out of concrete and glass, Emma," Nathan said, tears spilling down his face as he reached across the table and took her worn, hard-working hands into his. "And not one of those buildings ever gave me warmth. Not one of those dollars ever held my hand when I was lonely. I don't care about the crown anymore. I only care about being a father to my sons... and winning back the heart of the only woman I ever truly loved."

Emma stared at him, the heavy walls she had built around her heart over four agonizing years finally crumbling away under the truth in his eyes.

"You're really going to walk away from everything?" she whispered.

"I’m not walking away from everything," Nathan smiled gently through his tears. "I’m walking toward everything that actually matters."
