Chapter 1 - The Doorway of Regret

Nathan stood in the dimly lit hallway of the aging apartment building, the smell of damp brick and old paint heavy in the air. His hand hovered over the brass knocker, his heart hammering against his ribs in a way no high-stakes board meeting had ever managed.
The door opened before he could knock.
Emma stood there, framed by the warm, faint light of her small living room. She looked smaller than he remembered, yet her stance was solid, an impenetrable shield forged by four years of relentless struggle.
"Come in," she said quietly, stepping back.
Nathan stepped over the threshold, taking off his coat. The apartment was spotless, but tiny. In the corner sat two small wooden beds, framed by handmade star mobiles. On the coffee table lay the boys' drawings—rockets, galaxies, and a single drawing of a family with a blank, shadowy figure standing far off to the side.
"Emma," Nathan began, his voice raspy. "The lab... I just wanted to help. I saw you at the bakery on Friday. I saw the boys."
"You saw us counting pennies, Nathan," Emma corrected him, her voice cutting through the quiet like glass. She crossed her arms, standing in front of him. "And your immediate reaction was to throw five million dollars at my employer like a king throwing gold coins into a crowd."
"I didn't want to make things uncomfortable for you!" Nathan insisted, taking a step forward. "I wanted to relieve the pressure! The debt, the medical bills—"
"The debt belongs to us, Nathan," Emma interrupted, tears filling her eyes despite her fierce effort to hold them back. "The medical bills were from when Ethan and Noah were born at twenty-six weeks! They spent two months in the NICU fighting for every breath while you were in Dubai closing a real estate merger!"
Nathan froze. The breath was knocked out of his chest. "I didn't know you were pregnant when we signed the divorce papers, Emma. You never told me!"
"Because you told me you didn't want a family!" Emma wept softly, the pain of years finally bursting through her composure. "The night before I found out I was pregnant, you told me your business was your only child! You said emotional attachments were liabilities! You packed your bags and walked out because I wanted a quiet life and you wanted an empire!"
Nathan felt as though he had been hit by a freight train. He remembered that night. He had been blinded by ambition, terrified of weakness, convinced that conquering the world was the only way to prove his worth.

"They're mine... aren't they?" Nathan whispered, his voice trembling violently. "Ethan and Noah."
"They are my sons, Nathan," Emma said coldly, turning her back on him. "And you traded the right to be called their father the day you decided money was the only thing that mattered in this world."
