Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Montigues

Three weeks passed.
The Blackwood estate had transformed. The heavy, oppressive tension that had once filled the hallways was replaced by a sense of warmth and quiet security.
Thanks to Dr. Evans’ meticulous care—and Victor’s strict insistence—Lily’s ribs had healed remarkably well. Ethan’s arm was resting in a light, brightly colored cast, and the cheerful fourteen-month-old boy was already crawling around his playroom again, his energetic laughter echoing through the grand corridors.
In those three weeks, Victor Blackwood had changed as well.
The fearsome mafia lord, who used to spend eighteen hours a day in dark council rooms managing syndicate territories, now made it a strict rule to be home for dinner every single night.
He found himself drawn to the nursery, sitting on the floor in his expensive suits, watching Lily read storybooks to Ethan. He found himself mesmerized by the way her soft hazel eyes lit up when she laughed, by the gentle patience she displayed, and by the undeniable bond she shared with his son.
For the first time since his late wife passed away during childbirth two years ago, Victor felt his cold, guarded heart thawing.
However, peace in the underworld is always temporary.
It was a Tuesday afternoon. The sun was streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the estate’s sunroom. Lily was sitting on a plush rug, building wooden block towers with Ethan, when the heavy glass doors burst open.
Victor walked in, accompanied by Marcus. Victor’s expression was darker than it had been in weeks. He held a thick black folder in his hand.
"Lily," Victor said, his voice clipped. "Take Ethan to the upper nursery. Marcus, secure the perimeter."
Lily stood up immediately, sensing the danger in his tone. She picked up Ethan, hugging him close to her chest. "Victor... what’s wrong?"
Victor walked over to her, reaching out to gently brush a stray strand of hair from her cheek. His touch was warm, but his eyes were filled with storm clouds.
"Senator Montigue," Victor revealed quietly. "He didn't take the termination of the engagement well. He refused the deal for the port permits."
Lily’s heart sank. "Is he... is he going to the police?"
"No," Victor sneered, a dangerous edge returning to his voice. "The Senator knows the police can't touch me. He hired mercenaries. A rogue faction of the Russian syndicate led by Sergei Volkov. They’re planning something drastic to get Serena back and avenge their family honor."
Lily gasped, her knuckles turning white as she clutched Ethan tighter. "Are we in danger?"
Victor stepped closer, putting his hand on her shoulder, his thumb rubbing comforting circles against her skin. "I will burn this entire city to ash before I allow anyone to harm you or Ethan again. Do you understand me? You are safe here."
Before Lily could answer, the distant, shrill sound of the estate’s perimeter alarms suddenly began to blare.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
Red emergency lights flashed along the sunroom ceiling. Marcus pulled his weapon from his coat, his face grim. "Boss! They’ve breached the front gate! Heavy gunfire at the east entrance!"
"Take Lily and Ethan to the panic room!" Victor ordered instantly, drawing a black custom handgun from his holster.
"No! Victor, come with us!" Lily cried, terror seizing her chest as she looked at the weapon in his hand.
"I have to end this, Lily," Victor said, looking deep into her eyes, his expression fiercely protective. "The Montigues need to learn what happens when they threaten my family."
"Victor, please be careful!" Lily sobbed.
Victor leaned down and did something that caught her completely off guard. He pressed his lips firmly against hers in a brief, possessive, passionate kiss that sent a jolt of electricity straight to her core.
"Get to safety," Victor whispered against her lips. "I’ll be back for you."
He turned and strode out of the sunroom, his gun raised, morphing back into the deadly predator of Chicago.

Marcus grabbed Lily’s arm. "Miss Lily! Now! Move!"
Lily clutched Ethan, running behind Marcus as gunfire echoed through the grand hallways of the Blackwood mansion. The conflict had reached their doorstep.
