Chapter 2 - The Silent Witnesses

The drawing room was bathed in soft, warm light, but the atmosphere remained suffocatingly tense. Dr. Evans worked with practiced speed, administering a mild sedative to little Ethan and skillfully popping the baby’s dislocated shoulder back into place with a subtle, sickening click.

Ethan gave a small cry before slipping into a deep, medicine-induced sleep, his tiny hand still clutching the edge of Victor’s thumb.

Lily sat on a velvet armchair nearby, holding an ice pack against her bruised ribs. Anton stood near the door, his arms crossed over his massive chest, watching Serena like a hawk. Serena paced back and forth near the cold fireplace, her expensive silk dress rustling aggressively with every step.

"This is an insult!" Serena fumed, glancing at her diamond-encrusted wristwatch. "Victor, I have been locked in this room for an hour! My father is waiting for us at the fundraising gala! If we are late, it will be on the front page of every newspaper in Chicago!"

Victor slowly withdrew his thumb from Ethan’s sleeping grip. He laid the child gently on the leather sofa, covering him with a soft cashmere blanket. Then, he stood up to his full height of six-foot-three, buttoning his suit jacket.

He walked over to his grand oak desk, opened a drawer, and pulled out a glass glass along with a crystal decanter of amber whiskey.

"Serena," Victor said smoothly, pouring himself a drink. "You care deeply about public appearances, don't you?"

"Of course I do!" Serena replied, puffing out her chest, sensing a shift in his tone. "I am a Montigue! We have a reputation! Unlike this... this orphan nanny you hired from the streets! Victor, fire her tonight. Put her on a train back to whatever gutter she crawled out of, and let’s go to the gala."

Lily lowered her head, tears threatening to spill over her lashes. She didn't care about losing her job. She only cared that Ethan was safe. She had lost her own little brother to an illness three years ago, and Ethan had filled the gaping void in her heart. She couldn't bear the thought of leaving him in the hands of a monster like Serena.

Victor took a slow sip of his whiskey. "You see, Serena... my business relies on reputation as well. But not the kind that appears in newspapers. My business relies on loyalty. And absolute, unquestionable truth."

Victor tapped his signet ring against the crystal glass. Clink. Clink.

The door to the drawing room opened, and Marcus walked in, carrying a dark leather laptop case.

Serena’s eyes darted toward the laptop, and for the first time, a flicker of genuine terror flashed across her eyes.

"Boss," Marcus said, placing the laptop on the oak desk. "I retrieved the backup servers from the security room, as requested."

"Security room?" Serena blurted out, her voice dropping an octave. "What security room? You told me the cameras in the residential wing were disabled for privacy!"

A slow, terrifying smile spread across Victor’s razor-thin lips. It was a smile that promised absolute ruin.

"I told the public they were disabled," Victor said calmly, leaning over the desk and opening the laptop. "I am a mafia boss, Serena. Do you truly believe I would leave my only son, the heir to the Blackwood empire, completely unmonitored in my own house?"

Serena’s face turned as white as chalk. She took a step back, her hands beginning to tremble. "Victor... darling... you know how much I love Ethan... sometimes I get stressed... I’ve been planning our wedding..."

"Marcus," Victor commanded, ignoring her stammers. "Play the feed from the nursery from 6:00 PM today."

Marcus pressed a few keys. The bright high-definition screen lit up, illuminating the dark room.

The audio started playing immediately.

The crisp, unmistakable sound of a harsh slap echoed through the drawing room speakers.

THWACK!

On the video screen, Ethan was sitting on his playmat, crying softly. Serena was standing over him, her face twisted in pure malice.

"Shut up, you brat!" Serena’s recorded voice roared from the speakers. "You ruined my five-thousand-dollar dress with your drool! Stop crying or I’ll give you something to cry about!"

On the video, Serena reached down, grabbed the fourteen-month-old child by his tiny arm, and yanked him into the air like a bag of garbage. Ethan screamed in agony as his arm twisted unnatural.

Then, the camera showed Lily bursting into the nursery, her eyes wide with horror, throwing her body between Serena and the child. The video clearly showed Serena laughing as she kicked Lily down the corridor, dragging the screaming baby toward the stairs.

The recording finished. Silence descended upon the drawing room—a silence so heavy it felt like an iron weight crushing the chest of everyone present.

Lily closed her eyes, tears of relief streaming down her bruised cheeks. The truth was out.

Victor didn't scream. He didn't break his glass.

He slowly shut the laptop lid. He turned his head toward Serena. His eyes were no longer just cold; they were the eyes of a reaper waiting to harvest a soul.

"You lay your hands on my son," Victor whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute lethality. "You struck him. You broke his arm. And then you stepped on the woman who tried to protect him."

Serena fell to her knees, completely dropping her sophisticated act. She began to sob hysterically, reaching out to grasp Victor’s polished shoes. "Victor! Please! Forgive me! It was a mistake! I was stressed! My father... my father can help your shipping business! Think of the alliance!"

Victor stepped back, pulling his foot away from her touch as if she were a piece of venomous trash.

"Marcus," Victor said flatly. "Call Senator Montigue. Tell him his daughter’s engagement to the Blackwood family has been terminated."

"And... and what about Miss Montigue, Boss?" Marcus asked, his hand drifting to his weapon.

Serena gasped, her eyes wide with sheer horror as she looked up at the terrifying mafia lord. "Victor... please... don't kill me! Please!"
